Add and delete fields from document feature layers

Attribution is an important part of a successful GIS. You can add and delete fields in document feature layers using the feature layer Properties window.

Add a field

To add a field to a document feature layer, complete the following steps:

  1. In the table of contents window, click the Properties button.

    The Properties window appears.

  2. At the bottom of the window, click Add Field to add a new field to the feature layer.
  3. Fill in the name, field type, default value, and if applicable, length of the field parameters.
  4. Click Save.

Delete a field

To delete a field from a document feature layer, complete the following steps:

  1. I the table of contents window, click the Properties button.
  2. At the bottom of the window, select the field to delete.
  3. Press Delete on your keyboard.
  4. Click Save.
