Introduction to Community Risk Reduction

Community Risk Reduction can be used to streamline risk reduction activities and increase public awareness.

Over a million structure fires occur in the United States annually, causing fatalities, injuries, and property loss. While the number of fires is declining nationally, the rate of fire-related deaths continues to rise. Most fire-related deaths occur in residential settings, and over a third of those deaths occur in homes without working smoke alarms. While many fire agencies understand risks present in their community and make efforts to address them, understanding where risks are located improves decision-making and maximizes the impact of mitigation activities. It also ensures mitigation activities are being conducted in areas where emergencies are most likely to occur. Implementing a location-based method to identify, prioritize, mitigate, and monitor risk maximizes a fire department’s impact and leads to a safer community.

The Community Risk Reduction solution delivers a set of capabilities that help you identify and prioritize risks, operationalize mitigation efforts and risk-reducing interventions, monitor outcomes, and engage the public.
