In October 2023, Esri made the following changes to Esri Demographics and ArcGIS Places datasets:

Notice about Demographic maps
Esri offers a comprehensive set of ready-to-use demographic maps through the Demographics and Lifestyle group in ArcGIS Online. As of November 27, 2023, these demographic maps will no longer be discoverable through ArcGIS Living Atlas of the World. See the article Introducing the Demographics and Lifestyle group for accessing demographic maps for more information.
Canada
Esri removed the advanced demographics map services and layers for Canada in December 2023. These had been in mature support and not actively maintained. The item descriptions for these legacy demographic map layers contain the recommended replacements.
France
With the October 2023 release, Esri marked 12 ready-to-use French advanced demographics map items (from Esri France) as deprecated, removing them from ArcGIS Living Atlas. Specific deprecated map items include French management workers, industry workers, retired population, and so on. These items continue to be available through ArcGIS Online.
The recommended workaround is to access French map data from the generally available items in ArcGIS Living Atlas maps (Esri France); these have been updated with new data.
Spain
With the October 2023 release, Esri marked eight ready-to-use Spanish advanced demographics map items (from the AIS Group) as deprecated, removing them from ArcGIS Living Atlas. Deprecated map items include foreign population, population density, and so on. These items continue to be available through ArcGIS Online.
A proposed workaround is to access Spanish map data from the generally available items in ArcGIS Living Atlas maps (AIS); these have been updated with new data.
United States
As of October and December 2023, Esri removed the advanced demographics map services and layers for the United States. These had been in mature support and not actively maintained. The item descriptions for these legacy demographic map layers contain the recommended replacements.

Esri updated or added standard demographics datasets for the following 46 African countries or regions: Algeria, Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Cabo Verde, Central African Republic, Chad, Côte d'Ivoire, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, Eswatini, Gabon, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mauritius, Mayotte, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Réunion, Republic of the Congo, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Sudan, Tanzania, Togo, Tunisia, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
Notable updates include a vintage change to 2023 (2022 for Unemployed Population) and some settlement point updates.
North America
Esri updated or added standard demographics datasets for the following 25 North American countries or regions: Anguilla, Aruba, The Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, Cayman Islands, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Greenland, Guadeloupe, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Martinique, Mexico, Montserrat, Nicaragua, Panama, Puerto Rico, Saint Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos Islands, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Notable updates include a vintage change to 2022 (2021 for Unemployed Population) and some settlement point updates.
Advanced demographics
Esri made changes to the following advanced demographics datasets:
Canada
Esri updated the advanced demographics datasets for Canada, sourced from data supplied by Environics Analytics. Changes include the newly released CensusPlus 2021 dataset and new 2021 geographic boundaries based on 2021 Canadian Census data from Statistics Canada.
France
Esri updated the advanced demographics dataset for France, sourced from data supplied by Esri France, to vintage 2023. Other changes include a new coding system that removes the vintage from variable IDs.
Mexico
Esri updated the advanced demographics dataset for Mexico, sourced from data supplied by INEGI. Changes include updated boundaries and settlement points. This dataset is now also available in Spanish.
New Zealand - New
Esri added the new advanced demographics dataset for New Zealand, sourced from data provided by Stats NZ Tatauranga Aotearoa, vintage 2018.
Puerto Rico
Esri updated the advanced demographics dataset for Puerto Rico, including combining the Census 2000/2010/2020 dataset with the new 2020 Census Demographic and Housing Characteristics Data. See the United States below for information about the American Community Survey dataset added to Puerto Rico.
Spain
Esri updated the advanced demographics dataset for Spain, sourced from the AIS Group, to vintage 2023; this release also included additional variables.
United States
Esri updated the advanced demographics dataset for the United States. Esri U.S. Demographics for 2023:
- Historical Time Series variables for population, households, and housing units, including annual counts from 2010 to 2023, enable visualization of population changes over time.
- The Census 2020 dataset includes 1,400 new or updated variables, including detailed age by gender and race, households by relationship and household type, group quarters, housing by size, and housing by tenure. Additional data from the recently released Demographics and Housing Characteristics (DHC) file from the U.S. Census will be added to report templates and the American Community Survey datasets for the United States and Puerto Rico.
- The new Esri Retail Demand by Industry dataset represents an extension to Esri 2023 Consumer Spending (by product and service) estimates. Retail Demand by Industry highlights where consumers are likely to spend money. In all, these estimates provide an alternative view of spending potential based on the industries where such market transactions may occur.
ArcGIS Places data
Esri updated the following ArcGIS Places datasets:
- Canada—Esri updated the ArcGIS Places Business Locations and Points of Interest datasets sourced from data supplied by Data Axle and SafeGraph (vintage Q3 2023).
- Global—Esri updated the ArcGIS Places data sourced from data supplied by Foursquare (vintage Q3 2023), includes new coverage for Russia, Ukraine, Iran, and Belarus.
- Puerto Rico—Esri updated the ArcGIS Places Points of Interest dataset sourced from data supplied by SafeGraph (vintage Q3 2023).
- United States—Esri updated the ArcGIS Places Business Locations, Business Summary, and Points of Interest datasets sourced from data supplied by Data Axle and SafeGraph (vintage Q3 2023).
Esri India - New
Esri added a new ArcGIS Places dataset sourced from data supplied by Esri India, vintage April 2023, available in Business Analyst. This dataset contains more than 8 million points of interest, including businesses, government buildings, and cultural centers.

Esri updated or added standard demographics datasets for the following European countries or regions: Albania, Andorra, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus (Greek part), Czech Republic, Estonia, Faroe Islands, Hungary, Iceland, Kosovo, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Moldova (without Transnistria), Monaco, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Ukraine.

Esri updated the standard demographics dataset for Greenland to vintage 2022 from 2021.
Advanced demographics
Esri made changes to the following advanced demographics datasets:
Japan
Esri updated the advanced demographics dataset for Japan, sourced from data supplied by Esri Japan, with 53 new attributes (vintage 2020) for households, housing, jobs, population, education, income, and age, and three new spending attributes (vintage 2023).
Netherlands
Esri updated the advanced demographics dataset for the Netherlands, sourced from data supplied by 4orange, to vintages 2021 and 2022.
Puerto Rico
Esri updated the American Community Survey advanced demographics dataset for Puerto Rico, sourced from the U.S. Census Bureau's American Community Survey (ACS). The vintage was updated to 2017-2021. Other updates include new ZIP code and Place boundaries and the addition of a Poverty Index variable.
United States
Esri updated the advanced demographics datasets for the United States. Changes include the following:
- Geography levels and boundaries—Esri updated the following U.S. boundaries and geography levels: states, counties, census tracts, block groups, CBSAs, DMAs, Congressional Districts, Places, County Subdivisions, and residential ZIP codes.
- Esri Updated Demographics—Esri updated the dataset with the following changes:
- The data vintage was updated to 2023 (current year) and 2028 (five-year forecast).
- New 2023 variables: Esri updated the Socioeconomic Index, Gini Index, Ratios of Income Inequality, and Households in Income Tiers for 2023 and 2028, Labor Force by male and female.
- Esri Census 2020 and American Community Survey—Esri made the following changes to the datasets:
- The data was updated to represent the geography level boundary revisions noted above.
- Esri added a new Poverty Index to the American Community Survey five-year dataset (2017-2021).
- Esri Tapestry Segmentation—Esri updated the dataset vintage to 2023.
- Esri Consumer Spending—Esri made the following changes to the dataset:
- Data vintages were updated to 2023 (current year) and 2028 (five-year forecast).
- Esri has integrated the latest 2019-2021 Consumer Expenditure Surveys (CEX) from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).
- Esri Business Summary—Esri made the following changes to the dataset:
- The data vintage was updated to 2023.
- The data reflects the transition to the newer 2022 NAICS classification system, resulting in the removal of two categories: N19 Misc Retailers and N20 Nonstore Retailers. Businesses formerly in those categories are now included in other more applicable NAICS categories.
ArcGIS Places
Esri made changes to the following ArcGIS Places datasets:
- Canada—Esri updated the ArcGIS Places Business Locations and Points of Interest datasets sourced from data supplied by Data Axle and SafeGraph (vintage Q2 2023).
- Global—Esri updated the ArcGIS Places datasets sourced from data supplied by Foursquare (vintage April 2023).
- Puerto Rico—Esri updated the ArcGIS Places Points of Interest dataset sourced from data supplied by SafeGraph (vintage Q2 2023).
- United States—Esri updated the ArcGIS Places Business Locations, Business Summary, and Points of Interest datasets sourced from data supplied by Data Axle and SafeGraph (vintage Q2 2023).
Data Axle
Esri updated the Esri 2023 Data Axle Business Locations dataset. This includes improvements to the quality and accuracy of Data Axle Business Locations and additional business attributes. It also includes enhancements to business names, new and updated attributes, and improved NAICS-based and SIC-based categorization to improve location and competitive analysis. There are also some deprecated attributes.
Users will find changes to search methodology in ArcGIS Business Analyst, ArcGIS Community Analyst, and ArcGIS Pro with a Business Analyst license.
April 2023
In April 2023, Esri made the following changes to Esri Demographics datasets:
Germany
Esri updated the advanced demographics dataset for Germany, sourced from data supplied by Nexiga, to vintage 2022. The update includes updated population, households, businesses, and retail centrality variables.
Thailand
Esri updated the advanced demographics dataset for Thailand, sourced from data supplied by Esri Thailand, to vintage 2021. The update includes updated population and households variables and relies on source information provided by Thai federal agencies (the Department of Provincial Administration, the National Statistical Office, and the Community Development Department) through private sector company GlobeTech Co., Ltd.
India - New
Esri released a new advanced demographics dataset for India, sourced from data supplied by Esri India, which is based on the Indian Census PCA 2011 data tables. The dataset includes gender-wise population projections for urban and rural areas and includes estimates and forecasts starting with the 2011 census year through 2036.

American Community Survey (ACS)—Esri updated the U.S. Census Bureau's 5-year estimates (2017-2021) datasets for Puerto Rico and the United States to include 20 new variables about computer and internet usage by school grade.
United States
Crime Indexes—Esri updated the Crime Indexes dataset based on data supplied by Applied Geographic Solutions (AGS) to vintage 2022B.
ArcGIS Places
Esri updated the following ArcGIS Places datasets:
- Canada—Esri updated the ArcGIS Places Business Locations dataset sourced from data supplied by Data Axle to vintage Q4 2022 and the Points of Interest (POI) dataset sourced from data supplied by SafeGraph to vintage Q1 2023.
- Global—Esri updated the global ArcGIS Places datasets sourced from data supplied by Foursquare to vintage January 2023.
