U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics

Esri uses data sourced from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Consumer Expenditure and Diary Surveys to create two advanced demographics datasets for the United States: the Consumer Spending dataset and the Retail Demand by Industry dataset.

The Consumer Expenditure (CEX) and Diary Surveys provide data about expenditures, income, and the demographic characteristics of consumers in the United States. This data is used to revise the relative importance of goods and services in the market related to the Consumer Price Index. These surveys from the BLS are used as part of Esri's model to estimate current spending potential.

Estimates and five-year forecasts include per-category spending totals, average spending per household, and a Spending Potential Index (SPI) that compares local to national trends. An index >100 indicates above average spending. For Retail Demand by Industry variables, total industry expenditures represent the potential aggregate spending by all regional households per NAICS code.

Household Goods	Spending	Current year estimates and five-year forecasted household spending on household goods and related categories, such as laundry and cleaning supplies, toilet paper, household textiles, furniture, rugs, major and small appliances, and other items such as curtains and lamps.
Household Services	Spending	Current year estimates and five-year forecasted household spending on household services and related categories, such as child care, lawn care, home security systems, pest control, moving services, computer repairs, and so on.
