Restore items

When you delete items, most will be placed in a recycle bin. The process of automatically deleting items from the recycle bin begins after 14 days (336 hours from the time that the item was placed in the recycle bin). If you need to recover the item before it is permanently deleted from the recycle bin, you can restore it.

The item owner, members of the default administrator role, and members of a custom role with administrative privileges to view, update, and delete other users' content can restore items from the recycle bin. For instructions for administrators, see Manage content. For the item owner, see the steps below.

Restore a single item from the recycle bin

If you need to restore only one item, or if you need to restore each item to a different folder, restore a single item.

Follow these steps to restore one item from the recycle bin:

  1. Sign in to the organization as the item owner.
  2. Click Content at the top of the site and click the My content tab.
  3. Click Recycle bin Recycle bin under Folders.
  4. Optionally, type a keyword or sort a page in the recycle bin to help you find the item.
    • Type a keyword in the find box. Only the current page of the recycle bin is searched. If the item you're trying to find is not returned and the recycle bin contains more than one page, move to the next page and try again.
    • Click the Size or Date deleted headings to change the sort order for those properties on the page of the recycle bin.
  5. Check the box next to the item to be moved back to My content.
  6. Click Restore for the item.
  7. To restore the item to a different folder, do one of the following:
    • Choose a folder from the Restore to drop-down menu.
    • To create a folder in which to restore the item, choose Create new folder from the Restore to drop-down, type a name for the folder, and click the check mark button Check.

    Tip:

If you don't click the check mark button, the folder is not created and the item is restored to your default folder.

  8. Click Restore to confirm.

Restore multiple items from the recycle bin

When you restore multiple items at one time, all are restored to the same folder.

Follow these steps to restore multiple items at one time from the recycle bin:

  1. Sign in to the organization as the item owner.
  2. Click Content at the top of the site and click the My content tab.
  3. Click Recycle bin Recycle bin under Folders.
  4. Check the boxes next to each item to be moved back to My content.

You can choose up to 60 items at a time to restore.

  5. Click Restore at the top of the recycle bin item list.
  6. To restore the items to a different folder, do one of the following:
    • Choose a folder from the Restore to drop-down menu.
    • To create a folder in which to restore the item, choose Create new folder from the Restore to drop-down, type a name for the folder, and click the check mark button Check.

    Tip:

All items are restored to the same folder. Create a folder specific for restored items so you can inspect them before sharing them.

If you don't click the check mark button, the folder is not created and items are restored to your default folder.

  7. Click Restore to confirm.

Considerations when restoring from the recycle bin

Keep the following in mind when restoring from the recycle bin:

  • Sharing settings are not preserved for items in the recycle bin. For others to access the item after you restore it, you must share it again.
  • Restored items are not replaced in organization members' lists of favorite items.
  • Categories are not preserved for items in the recycle bin. If the item had categories applied, you must reassign them after you restore the item.
  • Scheduled tasks are not preserved on notebook and data pipeline items in the recycle bin. You must reschedule the task after you restore the item.
  • Predefined offline map areas are not preserved for web maps in the recycle bin. If you defined an offline map area for the web map, you must re-create it after you restore the web map.
  • Similar to how you cannot delete a source hosted feature layer before you delete dependent layers, you cannot restore dependent layers without restoring the source layer.
  • While an item remains in the recycle bin, it continues to use storage space and credits in the organization.
