When you publish a hosted feature layer from a comma-separated values (CSV) or Microsoft Excel file containing addresses or place names, you can review the placement of the points on the map and attempt to place any features that ArcGIS Online could not locate.
Note:
This functionality is currently only supported in Map Viewer Classic. It will be available in a future release of Map Viewer.
When the hosted feature layer is first published, a message appears indicating how many of the addresses or places were located by ArcGIS Online. If you overwrite the layer's contents, you will see this same message for addresses or places ArcGIS Online could not locate. You are asked to review locations when the publishing process completes. To open Map Viewer Classic and immediately review the placement of features, choose Yes. If you want to review feature placement at a later time, choose No. When you're ready to review, open the hosted feature layer's item page and click Review Locations under the layer name in the Layers section of the Overview tab.
When the layer opens in Map Viewer Classic, a table opens at the bottom of the map. The table lists all unmatched and matched addresses or places. The Review Locations pane also appears. When you choose a record in the table at the bottom of the map, the Review Locations pane is populated with suggested matching locations.
Only the hosted feature layer owner or an administrator can review addresses or places.
First, review any unmatched locations.
Review unmatched locations
Any addresses or places from the CSV or Excel file that could not be located are listed in the Unmatched table at the bottom of the map. There are three ways to find a match for an unmatched address or place. These are described in the next three sections.
Choose a suggested location
The easiest way to find a location for an unmatched address or place is to use the suggestions in the Review Locations pane. ArcGIS Online suggests locations that are similar to the information in your file.
- Select an address or place name in the Unmatched table.
When you select a record in the table, a list of suggested locations appears in the Review Locations pane, and the map zooms to the extent of all suggested locations.
- Select a suggested address or place name in the Review Locations pane. This selects the corresponding point on the map. Zoom in to the selected point to be sure the suggested location is correct.
- If the location is correct, click Match in the point's pop-up window to approve the new location.
- If the location is not correct, select and review other suggested locations until you find a match.
- If none of the suggested locations are correct, try changing the address or place information in the Unmatched locations table.
- Be aware that matching a suggested location to an unmatched address or place does not update the attribute information in your layer. If you want the address or place information in your table to be the same as the suggested information, edit the data in the table. For example, if the unmatched address is 123 Main Street, and you match it to 123 E. Main St., ArcGIS Online does not change the address in your table to 123 E. Main St. If you want the address in the layer to be 123 E. Main St., type that in the Unmatched table. Similarly, if the unmatched place contained a misspelling that prevented ArcGIS Online from placing it, choosing a place from the Review Locations pane does not fix the misspelling in the layer.
- Repeat the previous steps for all unmatched addresses or places.
Edit the address or place information and choose a suggested location
If there are no suggested locations for your unmatched address or place, or the suggested locations are not correct, try changing the address or place information in the unmatched table.
- Select an address or place name in the Unmatched table.
- Correct any address or place name information you know is incorrect. For example, if the place name is spelled incorrectly or the address numbers are transposed, double-click the cell that contains the incorrect information and type the correct information.
As you type new information in the table, the Review Locations pane is populated with suggested matching locations.
- Select a suggested location in the Review Locations pane. This selects the corresponding point on the map. Zoom in to the selected point to be sure the suggested location is correct.
- If the location is correct, click Match in the point's pop-up window to approve the new location.
- If the location is not correct, select and review other suggested locations until you find a match.
- If none of the suggested locations are correct, you can manually place a point on the map.
- Repeat the previous steps for the remaining unmatched addresses or places.
Similarly, if the unmatched place contained a misspelling that prevented ArcGIS Online from placing it, choosing a place from the Review Addresses pane does not fix the misspelling in the layer.
Add a point to the map
If none of the suggested locations are correct, even after you change the information for your unmatched address or place, you can choose to add a point manually on the map.
- Select a row in the Unmatched table.
- Zoom to the location on the map where the address or place should be.
- Click on the map to add a point for the selected location.
A point with a yellow marker is added to the map, and the pop-up window for that location appears.
- If the location you designated on the map is correct, click Match in the pop-up window to approve the new location.
- Repeat the previous steps for the remaining unmatched locations.
- If you want to perform a quality control check of the matched addresses or places, proceed with the steps in the next section. If you do not want to check the matched addresses or places and have finished reviewing and matching, click Done Reviewing in the Review Locations pane.
For quality control purposes, you can also review matched locations for accuracy.
Review matched locations
You can review the accuracy of the addresses or places that ArcGIS Online matched to locations on the map.
- Click Matched to see a list of all addresses or places that were located on the map.
- If you see any mistakes in the table, double-click the appropriate cell and type the correct information.
- When you select a matched address or place, the Review Locations pane is populated with suggested locations, including the matched address or place, which is denoted by a green marker symbol.
- Zoom to the matched location to be sure it is in the correct place.
- If it is, select the next row in the Matched table to review it for accuracy.
- If it is not, select another suggested location from the Review Locations pane. Zoom to the suggested location to see if it is correct. If it is, click Match in the pop-up window to approve the new location. If it is not, try other suggested locations until you find the correct one.
- If none of the suggested locations are correct, zoom to the location on the map where the address or place should be and click the map to add a point manually. If the point you added is in the correct place, click Match in the pop-up window to approve the new location.
- Repeat the previous steps for the remaining matched locations.
- When you finish reviewing and matching all addresses or places, click Done Reviewing in the Review Locations pane.
