December 2021

Detailed information about what changed for Esri Demographics advanced demographics and ArcGIS Places data for December 2021 is provided below.

Advanced demographics

The following updates were made to advanced demographics:

United States

This release includes Census 2020 Redistricting data and updates to Traffic data.

Census 2020 Redistricting data—This release includes Census 2020 Redistricting data from the U.S. Census Bureau. Topics include detailed information about the U.S. population by race, Hispanic or Latino ethnicity, group quarters, and housing status. In addition, Esri has made it even easier to work with 2020 Census data by including

  • Additional calculations for Hispanic population by race and Population under 18 years of age by race.
  • Key attributes from 2010 Census and 2000 Census for direct comparison with 2020 Census.
  • Corresponding Census Field IDs and for any Esri-derived calculations, mathematical expressions with Census Field IDs.
  • Additional levels of geography: ZIP codes, Designated Market Areas (DMA), and any custom area.

Traffic Counts—The Traffic Counts from Kalibrate tracks peak and low traffic volume by the number of vehicles that cross a certain street location (vintage Q4 2021).

Canada

This release contains the annual update to the Environics Analytics datasets. The 2021 data release reflects the impacts of the pandemic which resulted in more change than typically expected year over year:

  • The most notable change within DemoStats (current year estimates) is a decline in population growth, due to a slowdown in immigration. Additionally, more than usual year over year change is evident with Labour Force employment/unemployment rates. The impact on employment rates can also be observed in other topics such as Occupation, Place of Work, and Method of Travel to Work.
  • With the transition to working from home due to COVID-19, there is an observable change in the population working from home instead of their usual place of work.
  • When it comes to the expenditure data in HouseholdSpend, most of the year over year change can be explained by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Categories and variables such as Pre-recorded media, downloads and audio/video media, Household appliances, and Household equipment saw an increase in expenditures. Areas such as Movie theatres, Transportation by airplane, Public transportation, Casinos, bingos and gaming machines, Alcoholic beverages served on licensed premises, and Childcare saw a decrease in expenditures.
  • This year's update to PRIZM includes an update to the variable names in the PRIZM system.

2021/2026 Esri U.S. Demographic Updates—This release includes the 2021/2026 demographic forecasts for the U.S. which address market shifts in home value, employment, income, and net worth following the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 2021/2026 demographic forecasts include the following new items:

American Community Survey 2015–2019—First released by Esri in  March 2021, the American Community Survey (ACS) data is re-released in new 2021 geographies. The ACS is the de facto replacement for sample data from the decennial census. Releases for all areas down to block groups represent averages over 60 months, or five years (2015–2019, inclusive).

2021 Tapestry Segmentation—Tapestry Segmentation is a market segmentation system designed to identify consumer markets in the United States. Reflecting the increasing diversity among American consumers, Tapestry includes 67 distinct market segments and 14 summary groups. Tapestry Segmentation data is updated for 2021 and includes new Tapestry names for eight segments and one LifeMode group.

2021/2026 Consumer SpendingEsri combined the latest Consumer Expenditure Surveys (CEX), 2018–2019, from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) to estimate current spending patterns. The Consumer Spending data  is updated for 2021 and 2026. New data variables include spending on bike sharing/e-scooters.

2021 Market PotentialEsri's 2021  Market Potential data  measures the likely demand for a product or service in an area. With this release, Esri computes Market Potential by combining 2021 Tapestry Segmentation data with Doublebase 2020 data from MRI-Simmons. Doublebase 2020 is an integration of information from four consumer surveys. Each survey respondent can be identified by Tapestry segment, so a rate of consumption by Tapestry segment can be determined for a product or service for any area. With this change in surveys, there are new variables including voting, organic foods, 'SmartHome' tech, and more.

Traffic Counts—The Traffic Counts data  from Kalibrate tracks peak and low traffic volume by the number of vehicles that cross a certain street location. The Traffic Counts data comes from the Q2 2021 release from Kalibrate.

Crime Indexes—Crime Indexes provide a view of the relative risk of specific crime types. It is not a database of actual crimes, but rather the relative risk in an area compared to the United States in its entirety. The database includes indexes for several categories of personal and property crime. The  Crime data  comes from the 2021A release from Applied Geographic Solutions (AGS).
