Introduction to Transit Safety

Transit Safety can be used to document safety issues and manage corrective actions or mitigation activities.

Each transit ride must be carefully executed to ensure the safety, security, and timeliness of service. Safety is the highest priority for transit agencies. Even with the best foresight, unexpected events can occur. The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) recently adopted the practice of safety management systems (SMS) to improve transit safety. Implementing an SMS helps transit agencies continuously improve system safety. Rapid data collection and high-quality reporting can lead to process improvements across organizations. Visualizing this data over time allows transit agencies to identify trends and implement changes that address safety issues. Transit Safety is typically implemented by transit agencies that want to adopt an SMS to improve transit services and save lives.

The Transit Safety solution delivers a set of capabilities that help you document events (accidents, incidents, and occurrences), report hazards, create work assignments, dispatch field staff for mitigation activities, and monitor the status of safety events and hazards across the transit system.

Deploy the solution

This ArcGIS solution can be deployed in your ArcGIS organization.

Deploy the solution

See Deploying a solution for more information.

Transit Safety requires the following:

  • ArcGIS Online
  • ArcGIS Pro 2.5 or later (Basic, Standard, or Advanced)
  • ArcGIS Field Maps
  • ArcGIS Workforce

Information products

Transit Safety includes the following information products:

ItemDescriptionMinimum user type

Transit Event Reporter

AnArcGIS Survey123 form used by transit safety staff to document the initial event report of an accident, incident, or occurrence.

Transit Hazard Reporter

An ArcGIS Survey123 form used by the general public or transit staff to report a safety hazard issue.

Editor (required for transit staff only)

Transit Safety Manager

A Crowdsource Manager app used by transit safety staff to manage safety event investigations and hazard risk assessments and mitigation.

Transit Safety Dashboard

An ArcGIS Dashboards app used by transit safety staff to monitor events and hazards across the transit system.

Transit Mitigation Assignments

An ArcGIS Workforce project used by transit staff to manage mitigation activities in the field and track the resolution of each. Field users access the Transit Mitigation Assignments project using the ArcGIS Workforce mobile app.

Mobile Worker

Transit Field Mitigations

An ArcGIS Field Maps map used by transit staff to update the status of a mitigation activity while in the field.

Mobile Worker

Transit Data Management

An ArcGIS Pro project used by transit staff to convert a GTFS public transit dataset to route and stop features and manage service change communication.

GIS Professional Basic

When you deploy this solution in your ArcGIS organization, you also get an ArcGIS solution item that organizes the key information products and summarizes all the ArcGIS items (applications, forms, projects, maps, feature layers, feature layer views, and so on) included with the solution. The ArcGIS solution item also illustrates any dependencies items have on each other.
