Use Sewer Manhole Inspections

The Sewer Manhole Inspections solution delivers a set of capabilities that help utilities conduct routine manhole inspections, understand manhole conditions, record manhole inspections in the field, manage inspection activities, and ensure the entire organization has access to inspection information.

In this topic, you’ll learn how to use the solution by assuming the role of a user and performing the workflows below.

Manage operations

In order to ensure system reliability and avoid leaks or overflows, manholes need to be inspected on a routine basis.

Use the Sewer Manhole Inspections Center web experience to:

  • Plan Inspections
  • Assign Inspections
  • Monitor Inspections and Assignments

Plan inspections

Use the planner app to investigate manholes in need of inspection using the configured filters and to create manhole inspection assignments.

In this workflow, you will assume the role of an operations manager who wants to create assignments for manholes that need to be inspected.

  1. Sign in to your ArcGIS organization and browse to the Sewer Manhole Inspections Center web experience.
  2. Click the Plan button in the app header to open the Plan page.
  3. In the Sewer Manhole Inspections Planner app use the Create Unassigned Inspections widget to create new unassigned manhole inspections.
  4. Select the Unassigned template and choose from the following drawing options: Copy by rectangle, Copy by polygon, or Copy by lasso.
  5. On the map, select the manhole or manholes to inspection.
  6. Click Apply Field Matching and ensure that the GlobalID fields in the Target and Source are matched up and ignore the remaining fields.
  7. Click Apply and then click Create Features to create new unassigned assignments.
If only one manhole is selected, fill out the remaining attributes before saving.
  8. If multiple manhole inspections are created, click the Batch Assignment Editor widget and fill out the attributes.
  9. Click Save.

Once you have created the manhole assignments you will then assign mobile workers using an ArcGIS Workforce project.

Assign inspections

Use the Workforce project to assign manhole inspections to mobile workers.

In this workflow, you will assume the role of an operations manager who assigns manhole inspections to mobile workers.

Perform manhole inspections

Manholes are one of the most common assets found in the sewer system and the routine review and maintenance of these assets can reduce possible system failure and the associated cost. In order to keep these assets in good condition it is important to have a clear maintenance record. Field staff and engineers routinely inspect manholes to ensure they are working properly to prevent overflows or other issues from arising.

In this workflow, you will assume the role of a mobile worker who has been assigned the task of inspecting manholes in the field.

  1. Download ArcGIS Field Maps and ArcGIS Workforce onto your mobile device.
    Tip:

This workflow requires the latest versions of both ArcGIS Field Maps and ArcGIS Workforce so verify that you have the last versions of both apps before starting the following workflow.

  2. Open ArcGIS Workforce and sign in to your ArcGIS organization.
  3. Tap the Sewer Inspection Assignments map to open it.
  4. In the To do list, tap an assignment to view its location on the map and see details about the assignment.
  5. In the assignment details, tap Start to begin working on an assignment.
  6. Swipe up and tap Open in Field Maps.

This opens the Sewer Manhole Inspections Field Map map in ArcGIS Field Maps and defaults to the location of the assignment.

  7. Fill out the form and tap Submit once you are finished.
  8. Navigate back to Workforce and tap Finish to complete the assignment.
  9. To continue with additional inspections, follow the steps 3 through 8 and repeat as necessary.

Monitor assignments and inspections

Monitoring the progress of inspections allows staff to evaluate the best use of resources for their organization and provide the most reliability to their customers.

In this workflow, you will assume the role of an engineer who wants to evaluate the current progress of manhole inspections.

  1. Sign in to your ArcGIS organization and browse to the Sewer Manhole Inspections Center web experience.
  2. Click the Monitor button and choose either Assignments or Inspections to open the dashboards.
