Identifying layers on the map

The Identify tool allows you to search by place or county name within your plan and zoom to the selection. You can also make a selection on the map to learn more about the demographics and variables of the selected geography. From your selection, you can Zoom To or make assignments to a desired district.

Identify by Place or County name

Use the Identify drop down menu to choose a specific place or county name to identify.

The Identify tool, allows you to query for specific place or county by name. You can type or choose from a drop down list based on the state of the overall plan.

  1. On the Create ribbon, click Identify Identify button.

    The Identify panel expands.

  2. Query for a place or county name:
    • Type a place or county name in the appropriate drop-down menu.
    • Choose a place or county name from the appropriate drop-down menu.
  3. Next to the place or county field, click Show.
  4. The place or county is highlights on the map.
  5. Update the Selection Color using the color picker or the Hex color code (optional).
  6. Choose a selection option (optional):
    • Clear— Clears the selection from the map
    • Zoom To— Zooms the map to the geography selection

The place or county is highlighted on the map and the demographic fields and values update to reflect the selected geography.

Identify geography

Use the Identify tool to learn more about a location on the map.

The Identify tool, when applied to a feature (by clicking it), opens the Identify panel and displays the geography's attributes.

  1. On the Create ribbon, click Identify Identify button.

    The Identify panel expands.

  2. Choose a layer from which to identify from the drop-down menu.

    The county layer is selected by default. When you click the drop-down menu, you can choose another geography layer to identify: Block, Place, Block Group, Tract, County, or VTD.

  3. Click a location on the map.

    Layer information for the selected location is displayed on the Identify panel. Values for all Census demographics are displayed for the selected geography.

  4. Check the box for Use Grid Demographics Only (optional).

    When the option Use Grid Demographics Only is checked, the demographics list is filtered to only display those Demographics that are visible on the District Window.

  5. Check On Top next to a specific demographic variable (optional).

    The On Top option, displays the selected demographic variable at the top of the variable list.

  6. Update the Selection Color using the color picker or the Hex color code (optional).
  7. Choose a selection option (optional):
    • Clear— Clears the selection from the map
    • Zoom To— Zooms the map to the geography selection
  8. Assign the selection to a district by selecting the destination district and clicking Assign To (optional).

    You can assign choose to assign the selection from the Source District, this can be a specific district or any district, to a Target district.

    1. Choose the Source District from the drop down menu.
    2. Select the Target District on the Create tab.
    3. Click Assign To

Search for geography

Use the Identify tool to locate a specific place or county on the map.

The Identify tool can be used to located a specific place or county on the map.

  1. On the Create ribbon, click Identify Identify button.

    The Identify panel expands.

  2. In the Place or County drop-down menu, choose the desired place name or county name.
  3. Click Show.

    The selected place or county is highlighted on the map. Demographic information for all Census demographics are update based on the selected geography.

  4. Check the box for Use Grid Demographics Only (optional).

    When the option Use Grid Demographics Only is checked, the demographics list is filtered to only display those Demographics that are visible on the District Window.

  5. Check On Top next to a specific demographic variable (optional).

    The On Top option, displays the selected demographic variable at the top of the variable list.

  6. Update the Selection Color using the color picker or the Hex color code (optional).
  7. Choose a selection option (optional):
    • Clear— Clears the selection from the map
    • Zoom To— Zooms the map to the geography selection
  8. Assign the selection to a district by selecting the destination district and clicking Assign To (optional).
