Navigating the district map

Esri Redistricting has navigation tools that allow you to move around the application easily. You can pan, zoom, or zoom to plan using navigation tools on the Create ribbon or through a context menu.

Zooming in

You can zoom in on the map using the Zoom In tool. Use the Zoom In tool to draw a box around an area of interest.

  1. On the slider bar, click Zoom In Zoom In button.
  2. Use the mouse pointer to draw a box around an area of interest.

    Hold the mouse button as you draw the box. Release the button to end the box.

    The map zooms to the selected location.

You can alternately use keyboard shortcuts to activate the navigation tools. The Z key on the keyboard activates the zoom in tool. On the keyboard, hold Z and use the mouse pointer to draw a bounding box to zoom in.

Zooming out

You can zoom out from the map using the Zoom Out tool.

  1. On the slider bar, click Zoom Out Zoom Out button.
  2. Use the mouse pointer to draw a box around an area of interest.

    Hold the mouse button as you draw the box. Release the button to end the box.

    The map zooms out from the selected location.

You can alternately use keyboard shortcuts to activate the navigation tools. The X key on the keyboard activates the zoom out tool. On the keyboard, hold X and use the mouse pointer to draw a bounding box to zoom out.

Panning the map

You can pan the map to change the map center. When you pan the map, the map scale does not change.

  1. On the slider bar, click Pan Pan tool.
  2. Drag the map to the desired location.

    Hold the mouse button as you drag the map to a new location.

    The map pans to the new location. The map scale does not change.

You can alternately use keyboard shortcuts to activate the navigation tools. The C key on the keyboard activates the zoom in tool. On the keyboard, hold C and use the mouse pointer to drag the map and pan.

Zoom to previous extent

As you navigate around the map, you might want to return to the previous extent. Use the Zoom Previous tool to return to the previous map extent. The Zoom Previous tool allows you to navigate to one extent previous to your current extent.

Note:

The Zoom Previous button is not enabled when you first launch the application.

  1. On the slider bar, click Zoom Previous Zoom Previous tool.

    The map zooms to the previous extent.

  2. Repeat step 1 as desired.

    You can continue to click Zoom Previous until you reach the extent the map was at when you launched the application. Once you reach the initial extent, the Zoom Previous button will become unavailable.

Zoom to next extent

As you navigate around the map, you might want to change the map extent. You can use the Zoom Previous tool and the Zoom Next tool to change between map extents. The Zoom Next tool allows you to navigate to one extent newer than your current extent.

Note:

The Zoom Next button is only enabled when you have used the Zoom Previous tool.

  1. On the slider bar, click Zoom Previous Zoom Previous tool.

    The map zooms to the previous extent.

  2. Repeat step 1 as desired.

    You can continue to click Zoom Previous until you reach the extent the map was at when you launched the application. Once you reach the initial extent, the Zoom Previous button will become unavailable.

  3. Click Zoom Next Zoom Next button to return to the next recent extent. Repeat as desired.

Zoom to plan

The Zoom to Plan tool allows you to zoom to the full extent of the current redistricting plan. This allows you to navigate to the full extent of the plan, should you zoom in to a specific geography or zoom out from the map.

Note:

When you open a plan, the plan opens at full extent. If you select Zoom to Plan, you will see no visible change on the map.

  1. On the slider bar, click Zoom to Plan Zoom to Plan button.

    The map zooms to the full extent of the current plan.

Zoom to district

  1. On the Modify tab, select an active district from the drop-down menu.
  2. Click Zoom to District.

    The map zooms to the extent of the active district.

  3. Alternately, you can zoom to a district from a context menu:
    1. Right-click the district whose extent you want to zoom to.
    2. On the context menu, choose Zoom to District.
