Creating a thematic map

With Esri Redistricting, you can create thematic maps. A thematic map allows you to convey information about a single topic or theme, such as voting population or demographic.

Note:

Thematic mapping is not available at the VTD level. If you have a district plan in the County-VTD-Block hierarchy, you can only create thematic maps for County and Block.

  1. On the Create ribbon, click Themes.
  2. Choose a set from the drop-down menu.
  3. Choose a field from the drop-down menu.
  4. Check Use Label check box (optional).

The Use Label displays labels for the geography boundaries.

  5. Define the label options:
    • Label Color— adjusts the font color by selecting a color from the color palette or entering a Hex color code
    • Label Font Size— adjusts the font size of the label
  6. Check the Show Lines check box (optional).

The Show Lines displays the geography outlines on the selected thematic map. Showing the lines allows you to optimally visualize the thematic color polygons.

  7. Check the Color Areas check box (optional).

The Color Areas displays the geography based on the thematic breaks. When this option is unchecked, the thematic fill is no longer visible on the map. For the thematic map legend to display, the color areas option needs to be enabled.

  8. Check the Theme by Percentage check box (optional).

The Use Percent check box displays the selected variable as a percent on the thematic map. The Use Percent check box is disabled when the Universe set is selected.

  9. Click Update.

The thematic map is applied to the map. The color ramp is displayed and distinguishes the value range for each color of the thematic map. Each geography on the map is labeled with the Set, Fields, and any other options you have defined.

  10. Click Advanced Options to set additional attributes for the thematic map (optional):

    Use Second Label

The Use Second Label allows you to display another demographic variable label for the thematic map. When the Use Second Label option is selected, you also have the options to define:

    • Color (Label 2)— adjusts the second label font color by selecting a color from the color palette or entering a Hex color code
    • Use Percent (Label 2)— display the second label as a percent
    • Font Size (Label 2)— adjusts the font size of the second label
    • Set (Label 2)— choose the demographic Set to display as the base for the second label
    • Field (Label 2)— choose the demographic Field from the Set to base the second label

    Breaks

The Breaks drop-down menu allows you to select 2–10 breaks, or classifications, for the thematic map. By default, the thematic map is created with 5 classifications.

    Colors

The Colors menu allows you to change the color ramp, or graduated colors, used for the thematic map.

    Transparency

The Transparency slider allows you to modify the transparency and opacity of the thematic layer. At 0%, the thematic layer is opaque; at 100%, the thematic layer is fully transparent.

    Method

The Method menu allows you to select the type of thematic map to display:

    • Equal Interval is a method of dividing the total range of numeric values into categories so that each category covers an equal distance along the range of values. This method allows an equal distribution of range.
    • Quantile is a method of dividing a range of numeric values into categories so that each category has the same number of values. This method allows equal distribution in each category.

    Restore Default Values

The Restore Default Values button allows you to return to the default values in the advanced options.

  11. Click Update.

The thematic map is applied. Each geography on the map updates to display the values of the defined Set, Fields, and any other options you have defined.

To clear the dynamic thematic map, click Clear Theme. To restore the default settings, click Restore Defaults.
