Hazard Mitigation Planning can be used to conduct geospatial hazard risk assessments and share hazard mitigation planning information.
Hazard mitigation planning is an essential part of a community’s emergency management cycle. By identifying hazard risks and vulnerabilities, emergency management agencies can develop strategies that reduce the impact of disasters and protect people and property.
In the United States (U.S.), jurisdictions must have a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) approved Hazard Mitigation Plan in place to apply for funding through the Hazard Mitigation Assistance (HMA) grant program. Hazard Mitigation Plans must describe the location and geographical context of the jurisdiction, as well as the location, extent, and previous occurrences of natural hazards as part of a risk assessment and usually include an extensive set of maps. These maps also support public engagement during the planning process by sharing hazards, mitigation projects, and resilience efforts in the community.
The Hazard Mitigation Planning solution delivers a set of capabilities that help emergency management agencies understand hazards that may impact their community, generate a series of hazard risk maps, share hazard mitigation information with the public, and manage hazard mitigation planning and project feedback.
