Configure Renewables Land Acquisition

Renewables Land Acquisition can be used to streamline the acquisition of renewable energy production sites, manage site information and development constraints, and track interactions with property owners.

In this topic, you'll learn how to configure the Renewables Land Acquisition solution to meet specific needs of your organization.

Tip:
As you configure the solution, record the configurations or alterations you make with each version in a change log. This information will be valuable if you upgrade to a new version and need to evaluate the effort required.

Create an ArcGIS Pro project

The Renewables Land Acquisition solution comes with maps, apps, and layers to help staff in the organization manage outreach, perform specialized reviews, and track their land acquisition portfolio. In this workflow, you will create an ArcGIS Pro project to help you with your daily workflows and data requests.

To create an ArcGIS Pro project for this solution, complete the following steps:

  1. Start ArcGIS Pro; if you are already in a project, click the Project tab and click New.
    Note:
    Verify that you are signed in to your ArcGIS organization.
  2. Under New Project, click Map.
  3. In the New Project dialog box, for Name, type Land Editor.
  4. Click OK.
  5. In the Catalog pane, click the Portal tab, browse to the Renewables Land Acquisition folder, and double-click to open it.
  6. Right-click the ParcelBoundaries_Editing feature service and choose Add to Current Map.
  7. Right-click the Agreements_Editing feature service and choose Add to Current Map.
  8. Right-click the ParcelRequest_Editing feature service and choose Add to Current Map.
  9. Note:
    You will want to symbolize this layer on Request Status to make it easier to view which requests have already been addressed.
  10. Save the project.

Load data

Note:
This workflow is optional and doesn't need to be completed to work with the solution.

The Renewables Land Acquisition solution comes with a ParcelBoundaries layer and an Agreements layer. If you already have parcel and agreements data for renewable energy development, you can upload this data to your Land Editor ArcGIS Pro project.

To load existing parcels, complete the following steps:

  1. If necessary, start ArcGIS Pro and sign into your ArcGIS organization, and then open the Land Editor project that you just created.
  2. Add your existing source layers to the map.
  3. On the Analysis tab, in the Geoprocessing group, click Tools to open the Geoprocessing pane.
  4. In the search field, type Append, and then click the Append tool to open it.
  5. For Input Datasets, drag your existing parcel from Contents to the Input Datasets field in the Geoprocessing pane.
  6. For Target Dataset, drag the ParcelBoundaries layer provided with the solution from Contents to the Target Dataset field.
  7. For Field Matching Type, choose Use the field map to reconcile field differences.
  8. Perform field mapping.
  9. Click Run.
  10. Repeat these steps for the Agreements layer.

Configure acquisition campaigns

The Renewables Land Acquisition solution comes with layers, maps and apps to help manage land acquisition efforts. Some organizations like to group parcel evaluations as campaigns. Adding your campaigns to a pick list in the ParcelBoundaries and Agreements layers can ensure higher quality data.

To add campaign names to the ParcelBoundaries layer, compete the following steps:

  1. Verify that you are signed in to your ArcGIS organization, browse to the Renewables Land Acquisition folder, and open the ParcelBoundaries hosted layer item page.
  2. Click the Data tab.
  3. At the top right, click Fields.
  4. Under Display Name, click Campaign Name.
  5. For List of Values (Domain), click Edit.
  6. In the Label (displayed value) and Code (stored value) fields, type the campaign names.

    These values can be the same for simplicity.

    Note:

    To add more than one value, click Add.

  7. Click Save.
  8. Repeat these steps to update the Campaign Name list for the Agreements hosted feature layer.

Modify map extent and units

Set default map extent

When the Renewables Land Acquisition solution is deployed into your organization, it uses the map default set in your organization. If you want to change the default extent to prevent unnecessary panning and zooming by your users, update the map's extent to the area where your organization plans to acquire land.

To update the default extent, complete the following steps:

  1. Verify that you are signed in to your ArcGIS organization and browse to the Renewables Land Acquisition folder, and open the Outreach Manager map item page.
  2. Click Open in Map Viewer.
  3. Zoom the map to the desired extent.
  4. On the Contents (dark) toolbar, click Save and open and click Save.
  5. Repeat these steps to set the default map extent for the Land Review, Land Viewer, Outreach Field Editor, and Parcel Boundaries Editing web maps.

Update unit labels in maps

The Renewables Land Acquisition solution has been configured using units, such as acres and megawatts (MW), as the default unit labels. You may want to change these labels to meet the needs of your organization. In this section you will locate the arcade expression that contains the label for the unit and update it.

To update the unit labels, complete the following steps:

  1. Verify that you are signed in to your ArcGIS organization and browse to the Renewables Land Acquisition folder, and open the Land Review map item page.
  2. Click Open in Map Viewer.
  3. If necessary, in the Layers list, click Agreements.
  4. On the Settings (light) toolbar, click Pop-ups.
  5. Under Options, click Attribute expressions.
  6. Click Parcel Acres to open the Arcade editor.
  7. In the expression, Acres replace the word acres with the units used by your organization.
    Note:

    Do not delete the space before the unit type inside the quotation marks.

  8. Click Done.
  9. Repeat these steps to update the units for the Parcels layer.
  10. If necessary, repeat these steps to update the Agreements and Parcels units for the , Land Viewer, Outreach Field Editor, and Parcel Boundaries Editing web maps.

Update unit labels in the dashboard

In this workflow, you will update the unit labels in the Land Strategy Manager dashboard.

To update the unit labels, complete the following steps:

  1. Verify that you are signed in to your ArcGIS organization and browse to the Renewables Land Acquisition folder, and open the Land Strategy dashboard item page.
  2. Click Edit Dashboard.
  3. Hover over the Expected Capacity MW indicator element and click Configure.
  4. Click the General tab.
  5. For Title, click Edit.
  6. In the text editor, replace MW with the correct unit label, and then click Done.
  7. Review all indicator element titles and repeat the above steps to modify any additional unit labels.
  8. Click the Save button on the dashboard toolbar.

Provision users

The Renewables Land Acquisition solution includes four groups designed to help organize members based on their privileges and their work: Land Review Team, Outreach Team, Land Strategy Team and General Land Viewer.

To add members to the groups, complete the following steps:

  1. Sign in to your ArcGIS organization and verify that you have privileges to manage member groups.
  2. Click Groups at the top of the site.
  3. Click the group name to view its details.
  4. On the Overview tab, click Invite members.
  5. Check the check box next to the members that you want to add and click Add members to group.
  6. Repeat these steps for each group that you need to add members to.

To fully use the provided maps and apps, the provided groups are intended to be used by members with a minimum of the following user types:
