Configure charts

A chart is a graphical representation of data. Like maps, charts help uncover patterns, trends, and relationships in data. When used in conjunction with maps, charts can help you tell a more complete story with your data. The most helpful type of chart to use depends on the type of data in the layer and the information you want to present. For example, bar charts are useful for summarizing and comparing categorical data, histograms are a good choice for showing the distribution of a continuous numeric variable, and scatterplots visualize relationships between numeric variables.

Supported data

Charts can be created with the following types of layers and data:

  • Feature layers hosted in ArcGIS Online
  • Tables
Note:

Feature layers and tables saved in a group layer are supported if they are hosted in ArcGIS Online.

Creating charts is not supported for CSV layers, feature layers with location sharing, hosted imagery layers, or map image layers.

Create charts

In Map Viewer, you can create one or more charts from a feature layer or table in a map. To create a chart, complete the following steps:

  1. Confirm that you are signed in and, if you want to save your changes, that you have privileges to create content.

    Note:
You can explore maps, add and configure layers, and more without signing in. To save your work, sign in before creating a map.

  2. In Map Viewer, open the map containing the layer or add the layer directly.
  3. On the Contents (dark) toolbar, click Layers Layers or Tables Tables.
  4. Select the layer you want to use for the chart.
  5. On the Settings (light) toolbar, click Configure charts Configure charts.
  6. Click Add chart.
  7. Choose a chart type and configure the chart properties.

The new chart is added to the bottom of the map.

  8. On the Contents toolbar, click Save and open Save and open and click Save to save the map, layers, and charts.

Interact with charts

Once a chart has been created, you can open and interact with it to explore the data and get more information. You can make dynamic selections between the charts and maps. Selecting one or more features in a chart will select the same features in the map. You can open charts by clicking Charts on the Contents toolbar or clicking Configure charts Configure charts on the Settings toolbar. To open a chart from the Contents toolbar, complete the following steps:

  3. On the Contents (dark) toolbar, click Charts Charts.
  4. Select the chart you want to open.
  5. Click and drag in the chart to make a selection.
  6. Interact with the chart using its toolbar by doing any of the following:

    • Click Rotate chart Rotate chart to switch the orientation of a bar or line chart between vertical and horizontal.
    • Click Filter by selection Filter by selection to filter the chart to only the selected features. You can clear the filter by clicking the Filter by selection button a second time.
    • Click Filter by extent Filter by extent to filter the chart to display the features within the map extent. You can clear the filter by clicking the Filter by extent button a second time.
      Note:

Filter by selection and Filter by extent cannot be used simultaneously.

Filter by extent is not currently supported for line charts using a date field as the x-axis variable.

    • Click Clear selection Clear selection to clear any selections made on the chart.
    • Click Switch selection Switch selection to invert the current selection.
