Share models

Note:

ModelBuilder is currently in beta. Share your experience and seek support through the forums available in the ModelBuilder Early Adopter Community.

Analysis models document the inputs, tools, and parameters required to complete an analysis workflow. Sharing a model allows other ArcGIS users to replicate the analysis and increases transparency and collaboration.

You can share a model with your organization, select groups, or the public. Users with licensing to use ModelBuilder can open models that have been shared with them. Models that you do not own are opened in view-only mode, allowing you to see the inputs, tools, and workflow for the model. The model can then be copied to create an analysis model item that you own, allowing you to make the model active, edit the model, and run the model.

Considerations for sharing models

Before you share a model, ensure the model can be opened, copied, and run successfully by other users by considering the following:

  • Share the input datasets to the same users that will have access to the model. An unshared dataset appears in a not-ready-to-run state in a model and cannot be validated or used as an input to a tool.

If you do not own the input datasets, verify the current shared status and that the datasets will be available to users viewing your model.
  • By default, shared model items can be copied by users who can access them. Copying a model is an essential workflow for users accessing a shared model. Therefore, turning off the Allow others to save a copy of this item setting is not recommended. Models that you do not want copied should not be shared.
  • Subscriber and premium content, including premium tools, may not be available to all users. Subscriber and premium content appears in a not-ready-to-run state when a user does not have the required privileges to access the content.
  • Run the model before sharing and resolve any errors if necessary.

Share a model

You can share the analysis model item using the My content tab or the ModelBuilder (Beta) pane.

Note:

You do not need to be connected to an analysis session to share a model.

For best results, ensure the input layers are also shared to the same level when sharing a model.

To share a model from the ModelBuilder (Beta) pane, complete the following steps:

  1. Complete the steps to open the ModelBuilder (Beta) pane and create or open a model if necessary.
  2. In the ModelBuilder (Beta) pane, under Models in this map, click the options button Options next to the model name.
  3. Click Share model Share model.

    The Share window appears.

  4. For Set sharing level, choose Owner, Organization, or Everyone (public).
  5. To share the model with one or more groups, do the following:
    1. Under Set group sharing, click Edit group sharing.
    2. Select one or more groups with which to share the model.
    3. Click Apply.

The selected groups are listed under Set group sharing.

  6. Click Save.
    Note:

The Save button is not available until the sharing level or groups are changed.

The model is shared. If there are layers in the model that are not shared at the same level as the model, the Review sharing window appears, where you can update the sharing level for layers that you have permission to update.

Use shared models

You can open models that were shared with you, provided you have the required licensing to use ModelBuilder. Models you do not own open in view-only mode. You can create a copy of the model that can be edited and run.

Note:

You do not need to be connected to an analysis session to copy a model.

Input data variables reference hosted feature layer or table item. Copying a model does not copy the input datasets.

To copy and open a shared model, complete the following steps:

  1. Do one of the following:
    • On the model toolbar, click Save as Save as.
    • In the ModelBuilder (Beta) pane, click the options button Options next to the model name and click Save as Save as.

The Save analysis model window appears.

  2. Provide the following information for the new item:
    • Type a title.
    • Choose a folder in My content where you want to save the item.
    • Type tags and a summary that describe the item.
  3. Click Save.

The new analysis model is created and opens in view-only mode. The model name is listed under Models in this map.

To start editing the model, connect to an analysis session if necessary and click Make active.

Settings

The setting Allow others to save a copy of this item is enabled by default when a model item is created. The setting allows users who access shared models to create a copy of the model that can be edited and run. Users with administrator privileges can create copies of all models created by members of their organization, regardless of the model settings or shared status.
