Note:
ModelBuilder is currently in beta. Share your experience and seek support through the forums available in the ModelBuilder Early Adopter Community.
You can open a ModelBuilder diagram by creating a model or opening an existing model. If multiple models are opened, each diagram will appear in a separate tab.
Create a model
When you create a model, it opens for editing in ModelBuilder. A new model starts as a blank model diagram, into which you can add data and tools and connect them to form a workflow.
Complete the following steps to create a model:
- Complete the steps to open the ModelBuilder (Beta) pane if necessary.
- In the ModelBuilder (Beta) pane, click Connect.
Note:
Connecting to an analysis session consumes credits.
ModelBuilder connects to an analysis session and the Create model button is enabled.
- Click Create model .
The Create analysis model window appears.
- Provide the following information for the new item:
- Type a title.
- Choose a folder in My content where you want to save the item.
- Type tags and a summary that describe the item.
- Click Save.
The empty ModelBuilder diagram opens and an analysis model item is created. The model name is listed under Models in this map. A blue check mark next to the model name indicates the model is active.
Open a model
You can browse to and open models that you own. Users with administrator privileges can also open models owned by other members of the organization.
Complete the following steps to open a model:
- Complete the steps to open the ModelBuilder (Beta) pane if necessary.
- Click Browse analysis models .
The Browse analysis models window appears showing models from My content.
- Click My content and choose a different option from the menu (for example, My favorites) if necessary.
- Use the Search bar or Sort by menu to reduce the number of items or reorder the list of items if necessary.
- Click an analysis model item to select it.
- Click Confirm.
The ModelBuilder diagram opens and the model name appears under Models in this map.
Note:
Models open in view-only mode. You can connect to an analysis session and click Make active to enable editing.
Model modes
Models can be opened in the following modes:
- View only—The model diagram can be viewed, but editing—including adding or removing elements and running the model—is not enabled. When you browse to and open an existing model, it automatically opens in view-only mode.
- Active—The model can be viewed, edited, run, and saved. The active model is associated to the compute resources made available by the analysis session.
When you create a model, it automatically opens in active mode. You can click Make active on a view-only model to activate it.
Note:
You must be connected to an analysis session to open a model in active mode.
Intermediate data is lost when an active model is switched to view-only mode. Tools with intermediate data outputs will need to be rerun if the model is made active and run again. An active model becomes view only when you make a different model active or disconnect from the analysis session. If there are unsaved edits, you will be prompted to save or discard changes.
Multiple models
You can open multiple model diagrams at the same time. Each model will appear in a different tab. Other visualizations that open at the bottom of the map, such as tables, charts, raster function templates, and analysis history, can be opened at the same time as the model diagrams and will appear in their own tabs.
Only one model can be in active mode at one time.
Save models in a web map
You can save the models you've created or opened in a web map. Only the model item owners and users with administrator privileges will be able to see the models when viewing the web map.

Analysis model items cannot currently be shared.
