Configure and use selectors

With MicroStrategy Web, you can easily add interactivity between datasets in your document or dashboard by configuring selectors. Selectors allow users to filter data based on selections made when viewing a document or dashboard.

Esri Maps for MicroStrategy allows you to configure a map as a selector. For example, if your dashboard has a map showing U.S. states and a grid showing addresses with profit and revenue, you can configure a selector that allows users to select a state or group of states in the map and have the grid update to show addresses for the selected states only.

Configuring a map as a selector in Design Mode or Editable Mode enables a set of selection tools in Interactive Mode. When viewing the dashboard in Interactive Mode, document analysts can use these tools to make selections on the map and dynamically update other datasets in the document or dashboard.

You can also configure a map as a target of a selector. For example, if your dashboard has a grid showing U.S. states with profit and revenue and a map showing U.S. addresses, you can configure a selector that allows users to select a state in the grid and have the map update to show addresses for that selected state only.

To configure a map as a selector or as a target of a selector, your document or dashboard must have at least two grid areas in the design window, one of which must be configured as a map, and both the map and the target grid must have an attribute in common. See Build a map-enabled document or dashboard for more information about adding and configuring a map in Esri Maps for MicroStrategy.

Configure the map as a selector

  1. Open the document or dashboard in Design Mode.
  2. On the report you configured as a map, or on any grid that is a secondary datasource for the map, right-click on the column header for the attribute that you want to use as the selector, and click Use as Selector.
  3. Right-click on the column header again and click Edit Selector.
  4. In the Configure Selector window, click the target grid you want and click the arrow button to add it to the Selected Targets list. You can select one or more targets.
  5. Click OK to create the selector and return to the document or dashboard.
  6. Click the Interactive Mode button on the toolbar to view your document or dashboard.

You will see a new Select entry under the Tools menu in the map. If you click Select, you will see a set of tools that you can use to make, remove, and clear selections on the map. See Use the map as a selector.

Use the map as a selector

  1. In Interactive Mode, click the Tools menu and click Select.
  2. If necessary, click and drag the mouse on the map to move it to the desired location for making selections. You can also use the zoom slider to zoom in or out as needed.
  3. Click the Choose a layer drop-down arrow and select the layer containing the features you want to select.
  4. Do any of the following to make selections:
    • Click the Rectangle selection tool and click and drag a rectangle on the map to select the features you want. To complete the selection, release the mouse. This step can be repeated multiple times to add features to the selection.
    • Click the Free-hand selection tool and click and drag a free-hand shape on the map to select the features you want. To complete the selection, release the mouse. This step can be repeated multiple times to add features to the selection.
    • To remove features from the selection, click the Remove from selection tool and click and drag a rectangle around the selected features you want to remove. The related datasets are updated based on the updated selections on the map.
    • Click the Clear selection tool to clear all selections in the layer and return the related datasets to their original states.

One or more datasets in the document or dashboard are updated according to the selection you made.

  5. To make changes to the actions you want to trigger, click Links and selectors and choose the option you want. For example, if you want to add features to your selection without triggering a selector action, click the None option. You can also trigger a link action if it has been configured by the document designer.
