Configure and use links

In MicroStrategy Web, you can configure links to open related external reports or documents from a document or dashboard. Links can be created on primary and secondary datasets added to a visualization.

With Esri Maps for MicroStrategy, document designers can configure a dynamic link from a map to an external report or document. For example, a document designer can create a dashboard with a map showing customer region by revenue and add a link to a related report displaying employee region by profit.

One way to use links in MicroStrategy Web is to dynamically display a related report or document prompted by a common attribute that is in both the source document or dashboard and the target report or document. This allows the designer to replicate customized drilling workflows. The steps for this scenario are described below.

Configuring links in Design Mode enables a set of selection tools Interactive Mode. When viewing the dashboard in Interactive Mode, document analysts can use these tools to make selections on the map and dynamically display the target report or document with the data filtered according to the selections.

Configure a dynamic link from a map to a prompted report

  1. Open the document or dashboard in Design Mode.
  2. On the report grid that you configured as a map, right-click the column for the attribute that you want to use for the link. This attribute must also exist in the target report or document. Click Edit Links.
  3. Click the New button and enter the text you want to display as a description of the link.
  4. Click the Select Target button and browse to the prompted report or document you want to use as a link target. Click OK.
  5. Select the attribute in the target report and select Answer dynamically from the drop-down list.
  6. Check the Open in new window check box if you want to open the target report or document in a new browser window or tab.
  7. Click OK.
  8. If you have other secondary dataset grids representing layers in your map and want to configure links for them, repeat these steps for each secondary dataset grid as needed.

Use configured links on the map

  1. In Interactive Mode, click the Tools menu and click Select.
  2. If necessary, drag your mouse on the map to move it to the desired location for making selections. You can also use the zoom slider to zoom in or out as needed.
  3. Click the Choose a layer drop-down arrow and select the layer containing the features you want to select.
  4. Do any of the following to make selections:
    • Click the Rectangle selection tool and drag a rectangle on the map to select the features you want. To complete the selection, release the mouse. This step can be repeated multiple times to add features to the selection.
    • Click the Free-hand selection tool and drag a free-hand shape on the map to select the features you want. To complete the selection, release the mouse. This step can be repeated multiple times to add features to the selection.
    • To remove features from the selection, click the Remove from selection tool and drag a rectangle around the selected features you want to remove. The related datasets are updated based on the updated selections on the map.
    • Click the Clear selection tool to clear all selections in the layer and return the related datasets to their original states.
  5. After completing your selection, click Links and selectors.
  6. Click the option button next to the link name and click the link icon beside it.

The target report or document is displayed with the data filtered according to your selection.
