Add MicroStrategy data to your map

Once you have created a map-enabled document or dashboard in MicroStrategy Web (see Building a map-enabled document or dashboard), you can add your MicroStrategy data to the map.

A map is a spatial document composed of one or more layers. A layer is the way in which Esri Maps for MicroStrategy visually represents geographic datasets. A layer is similar to a legend item on a paper map. For example, on a road map, roads, national parks, political boundaries, and rivers might be considered different layers. When you add MicroStrategy business data to a map, Esri Maps for MicroStrategy creates a layer and displays it on the Contents pane. Once the layer is created, you can configure how it is styled, set its transparency, enable clustering or heat maps, turn on pop-up windows, and so on.

  1. From your document or dashboard in MicroStrategy Web, click the Widget Properties button in the Properties and Formatting window to open the Esri Maps for MicroStrategy Properties window.
  2. In the Esri Maps for MicroStrategy Properties window, sign in to ArcGIS if you are not already signed in. For more information, see Sign in to ArcGIS.
  3. Click the Add data menu and click from MicroStrategy.

The datasets you included in your document or dashboard appear in the add data from MicroStrategy pane with the primary dataset listed first, followed by any secondary datasets.

  4. Select the dataset you want to add and click Next.
  5. Do one of the following:
    • Specify how location is represented in the current dataset by clicking one of the location types.
    • If you want to use a map service or feature service from ArcGIS as a location type, click Add location type and follow the steps in Adding a location type.
  6. Click Next.
  7. Select and specify the values for the columns containing the location information. Click Next.
  8. Do the following:
    1. Select the format of the column data that you specified.
    2. If you want the map to zoom to the full extent of the layer that is created when the data is added, check the Zoom to layer check box.
    3. If you want a different name for the layer, type a new name in the Layer name box.
  9. Click Add data to map.

A layer containing the data is added to the map and is listed in the Contents pane. If you checked the Zoom to layer check box, the map zooms to the full extent of the layer you added.

  10. Repeat steps 3 through 9 for each additional dataset you want to display in the map.
  11. To save your map, click OK in the Esri Maps for MicroStrategy Properties window; then click OK in the Properties and Formatting window.
  12. Click the Save button to save your document or dashboard.
