Configure unit boundaries

Unit boundaries represent the edges of traversable indoor spaces, which are known as units. Examples of units include rooms, hallways, elevator cabs, and stairwells. ArcGIS Indoors supports unit boundaries represented by single entities such as closed polylines, or using a combination of multiple entities such as wall polylines, door blocks, and window lines.

You must configure the Unit Boundaries tab in the Configure Validation pane in ArcGIS Indoors for AutoCAD before running validation checks. Configuring unit boundaries allows you to validate the data using the Unclosed Shape and Self-Intersection validation checks.

Set the unit boundaries feature layer

Indoors for AutoCAD uses ArcGIS for AutoCAD feature layers to store entity selection criteria. Using feature layers ensures that the correct entities are selected for import to the Indoors database. Selections are typically based on CAD layers, but criteria can also include color, line type, or other CAD properties.

When you configure the Unit Boundaries tab in the Configure Validation pane, you can specify the CAD layers to use for unit boundary geometry during validation checks.

To configure a feature layer for unit boundaries, complete the following steps:

  1. Start Autodesk AutoCAD and open a new or existing project.
  2. On the ribbon, in the Validation group, click Configure Configure.

    The Configure Validation pane appears.

  3. In the Configure Validation pane, click the Unit Boundaries tab.
  4. Create a feature layer, if necessary.
    1. In the Configure Validation pane, in the Feature Layer section, click New New to open the Feature Layer Properties dialog box.
    2. Type a name in the Feature layer name text box or accept the default value.
    3. Select one or more CAD layers with entities that represent unit boundaries.
      Tip:

For optimal performance, the feature layer should only include entities that represent boundaries. To filter entities based on CAD properties, such as color or line type, use ArcGIS for AutoCAD to edit the feature layer.

    4. Click OK.
  5. Click the Feature Layer drop-down arrow and choose the polyline feature layer that defines the entities in the drawing that represent unit boundaries.

Set unit boundary tolerances

CAD floor plans often include spaces that are not units, such as support columns or spaces between walls. Floor plan lines may also have gaps that are small enough to be disregarded during integration into GIS data. You can set tolerances to account for these conditions when validating CAD data with Indoors for AutoCAD.

Note:

The unit of measure must be defined to set tolerances. You can adjust the drawing's insertion scale to change the unit of measure before opening the Configure Validation pane.

To configure unit boundary tolerances in the Configure Validation pane, complete the following steps:

  1. Start Autodesk AutoCAD and open a new or existing project.
  2. On the Indoors for AutoCAD ribbon, in the Validation group, click Configure Configure.

    The Configure Validation pane appears.

  3. In the Configure Validation pane, click the Unit Boundaries tab.
  4. Set the Minimum width and Minimum area parameter values to allow Indoors for AutoCAD to ignore spaces that are too narrow or small to be units.

Indoors for AutoCAD attempts to validate all spaces if the minimum tolerance values are set to 0.

  5. Set the Gap tolerance parameter for linework gaps to be disregarded by validation.

This tolerance must match the XY tolerance environment setting in ArcGIS Pro.

The data is now configured for the Unclosed Shape and Self-Intersection validation checks.
