Work with the dashboard

The dashboard shows the metric values of the plan scenarios. Use metrics to quantify and analyze scenarios and compare them. Each metric consists of at least one metric source. Metric sources are aggregated as a weighted sum and together with existing metric values summed up to the metric value.

In land-use plans, you can also calculate potential metric values based on the land-use regulation.

You can export the dashboard metric values to a spreadsheet for further analysis outside of ArcGIS Urban.

Metrics

When you create a plan, metrics are copied from the urban model. If there are existing metric values, they are also copied. In the plan editor, you can configure new metrics, edit metrics, and add existing values to metrics that reflect the current conditions.

Explore metrics

Use the graph and the list view to explore the metrics that are defined for a plan and how they depend on each other.

Switch between the graph and list views

To switch between the graph and list views, complete the following steps:

  1. Open the plan editor.
  2. Expand the drop-down menu named after the plan and choose Configure plan.

    The plan configuration opens to the general plan settings tab by default.

  3. Click Dashboard and choose Metrics from the drop-down list.
  4. Choose from the view options in the blue header bar.
    • Graph view Graph view—Display the metrics in a dependency graph.
    • List view List view—Display the metrics in a list.

Navigate and explore the graph with the mouse

The minimap at the lower right shows the current view relative to the whole graph.

To navigate the graph using the mouse, complete the following steps:

  1. Open the metrics page in the graph view.
  2. Explore the graph using the mouse.
    • To move or pan the graph, click and drag the graph in the direction you want it to move.
    • To zoom in and out in the graph, use the mouse wheel button. To zoom in, rotate the mouse wheel up. To zoom out, rotate the mouse wheel down.
      Tip:

      You can also double-click to zoom in at the location of the pointer. To zoom out, double-click while pressing Shift.

Explore the graph using the zoom tools

The minimap at the lower right shows the current view relative to the whole graph.

To zoom in and out using the zoom tools, complete the following steps:

  1. Open the metrics page in the graph view.
  2. Explore the graph using the zoom tools at the lower left corner of the map.
    • Click the Zoom in button Zoom in to zoom in.
    • Click the Zoom out button Zoom out to zoom out.
    • Click the Fit to screen button Fit to screen to fit the graph in the screen.

Explore graph dependencies

To explore the graph dependencies, complete the following steps:

  1. Open the metrics page in the graph view.
  2. Explore the graph dependencies by hovering over metrics and metric connections.
    • Hover over a metric to highlight all incoming and outgoing connections.
    • Hover over a metric connection to highlight it.
Tip:

Hover over metrics and metric connections to see ToolTips with additional information:

  • Hover over metrics to see the metric description.
  • Hover over connection nodes to see the calculation details.
  • Hover over connection nodes highlighted in red to see details about missing parameters.

Adjust the graph layout

To move metrics and adjust the layout of the dependency graph, complete the following steps:

  1. Open the plan editor.
  2. Expand the drop-down menu named after the plan and choose Configure plan.

    The plan configuration opens to the general plan settings tab by default.

  3. Click Dashboard and choose Metrics from the drop-down list.
  4. Move metrics to adjust the layout.
    • Move a single metric—Click the gray box around a metric and drag it to the new location.
    • Move multiple metrics (Shift selection)—Select multiple metrics by pressing the Shift key while clicking the gray box around a metric. Then drag all selected metrics to the new location.
    • Move multiple metrics (rectangle selection)—Select multiple metrics by pressing the Alt key and drawing a selection box around metrics. Then drag all selected metrics to the new location.

    The new graph layout is saved automatically.

Note:
Click Auto layout in the blue header to automatically lay out the metrics graph. This will overwrite the current graph layout.

Add and configure a metric

The sections below describe how to add and configure a metric. You can add metrics in the following ways:

  • Add a connected metric in the graph—Add a metric connected to an existing metric.
  • Add a metric using the add tool Add—Add a metric and connect it later.

Add a connected metric in the graph

To add a metric in the graph that is connected to an existing metric, complete the following steps:

  1. Open the plan editor.
  2. Expand the drop-down menu named after the plan and choose Configure plan.

    The plan configuration opens to the general plan settings tab by default.

  3. Click Dashboard and choose Metrics from the drop-down list.
  4. Hover over the add metric connection button Add metric connection next to the metric you want to connect the new metric to.

    The pointer turns into a crosshair symbol.

  5. Click and drag the pointer to a blank space on the graph.

    A new metric with the name Untitled metric and connected to the source metric is created. The newly created metric and metric connection node are highlighted with a thick border.

  6. Optionally, click the metric name to configure the metric.
  7. Optionally, click the metric connection to configure the metric connection.
Note:

The added metric connection is highlighted in red because it is missing a calculation parameter. See Edit a metric connection to learn how to configure a metric calculation parameter.

Add a metric using the add tool

To add a metric using the add tool, complete the following steps:

  1. Open the plan editor.
  2. Expand the drop-down menu named after the plan and choose Configure plan.

    The plan configuration opens to the general plan settings tab by default.

  3. Click Dashboard and choose Metrics from the drop-down list.
  4. Click the Add button Add on the blue header bar.

    A dialog box appears.

  5. Configure the metric. To do so, resume at step 6 of the Configure a metric section below.
Note:

The added metric is highlighted in red because it is not connected to the graph. You must connect it to another metric to ensure that it is calculated correctly. See Connect metrics to learn more.

Configure a metric

To configure a metric, complete the following steps:

  1. Open the plan editor.
  2. Expand the drop-down menu named after the plan and choose Configure plan.

    The plan configuration opens to the general plan settings tab by default.

  3. Click Dashboard and choose Metrics from the drop-down list.

    The metrics configuration automatically opens in the graph view Graph view.

  4. Optionally, switch to the list view.
  5. Open the metric configuration dialog box.
    • Graph view Graph view—Click the metric name.
    • List view List view—Click the configure button Configure button.

    The metric dialog box appears.

  6. Provide a name, description, and unit type.

    The unit type of a metric cannot be changed after coefficients are set on space-use types, after the metric is used in another metric, or if a metric has existing metric values.

  7. Configure the Rounding method for metrics of unit types Number and Number per day:
    • None—Metric value is not rounded to a whole number.
    • Nearest—Metric value is rounded to the nearest whole number.
    • Up—Metric value is rounded up to the next larger whole number.
    • Down—Metric value is rounded down to the next smaller whole number.

    Each metric source value is rounded per space-use type on each parcel and is summed up to the total metric value. If the metric has existing metric values, this data is rounded per value.

  8. Click OK.

    The dialog box closes. If you edited the metric in the graph view, it is highlighted with a thick border.

Delete a metric

To delete a metric, complete the steps below. You cannot delete metrics that are used by another metric or have metric values.

  1. Open the plan editor.
  2. Expand the drop-down menu named after the plan and choose Configure plan.

    The plan configuration opens to the general plan settings tab by default.

  3. Click Dashboard and choose Metrics from the drop-down list.

    The metrics configuration automatically opens in the graph view Graph view.

  4. Optionally, switch to the list view.
  5. Open the metric configuration dialog box.
    • Graph view Graph view—Click the metric name.
    • List view List view—Click the configure button Configure button.

    The metric dialog box appears.

  6. Click the delete button Delete and confirm the deletion.

Connect metrics

The sections below describe how to add and configure a metric connection. By connecting two metrics, you can use one metric as a source in another metric. Metric sources are aggregated as a weighted sum and summed up to the metric value.

See the Edit a metric connection section below to learn more about how to weight a source metric.

You can connect metrics in the following ways:

  • Draw a connection in the graph.
  • Use the connect tool Connect.

Connect metrics in the graph

To connect metrics in the graph, complete the following steps:

  1. Open the plan editor.
  2. Expand the drop-down menu named after the plan and choose Configure plan.

    The plan configuration opens to the general plan settings tab by default.

  3. Click Dashboard and choose Metrics from the drop-down list.

    The metrics configuration opens in the graph view Graph view.

  4. Hover over the add metric connection button Add metric connection next to the metric you want to connect to another metric.

    The pointer turns into a crosshair symbol.

  5. Click and drag the pointer to the target metric.

    A new metric connection is created and its node is highlighted with a thick border.

  6. Optionally, click the metric connection to configure the metric connection.

Connect metrics using the connect tool

To connect metrics using the connect tool, complete the following steps:

  1. Open the plan editor.
  2. Expand the drop-down menu named after the plan and choose Configure plan.

    The plan configuration opens to the general plan settings tab by default.

  3. Click Dashboard and choose Metrics from the drop-down list.
  4. Click the Connect button Connect on the blue header bar.

    A dialog box appears.

  5. Define a connection from one metric to another using the From and To drop-down menus.

    The metric specified in From is used as a source for the metric specified in To.

  6. Click OK.

    The connection is added to the dependency graph. The connection node is highlighted with a thick border and visualized in red because it is missing a calculation parameter. See Edit a metric connection to learn how to configure a metric calculation parameter.

Edit a metric connection

On the metrics connection dialog box, you can define how a metric source contributes to the target metric.

To edit the connection between two metrics, complete the steps below.

Note:

You can only edit metric connections in the graph view.

  1. Open the plan editor.
  2. Expand the drop-down menu named after the plan and choose Configure plan.

    The plan configuration opens to the general plan settings tab by default.

  3. Click Dashboard and choose Metrics from the drop-down list.

    The metrics configuration opens in the graph view Graph view.

  4. Click the Edit connection button Edit connection on the connection between two metrics.

    A dialog box appears.

  5. Choose the contribution type of the source metric value in the Contribution section.
    • Weighted with constant value—The weight is the same regardless of the space-use types.
    1. Provide a constant value in the input field in the Weighting section.
    2. Use the drop-down menu in the Weighting section to configure the metric source weighting.

      • x—The source metric value is multiplied by the weight value.
      • /—The source metric value is divided by the weight value.

    • Weighted with space use type parameter—A new parameter is added to the space-use types, which allows you to configure a different weight for each space-use type.
    1. Provide a name in the input field in the Weighting section.
    2. Use the drop-down menu in the Weighting section to configure the metric source weighting.

      • x—The source metric value is multiplied by the weight value.
      • /—The source metric value is divided by the weight value.

    3. Add a space-use type parameter in the Space use type section. Select a space-use type in the drop-down list and provide a value in the input field. Click Add to add the parameter to the list.

      Note:
      You can also define space-use type parameters on the Metric parameters tab of the space-use type settings. See Work with space-use types to learn more.

    • Add—The metric source is added to the target metric.
    • Subtract—The metric source is subtracted from the target metric.
    Note:

    Add and Subtract are only enabled if the source and target metrics are of the same unit type. See Configure a metric to learn more.

  6. Optionally, configure a chart label.

    If configured, the chart label is displayed on the dashboard instead of the source metric name.

  7. Click OK.

    The Edit connection dialog box closes. If you edited the metric connection in the graph view, its connection node is visualized with a thick border.

Delete a metric connection

To delete a metric connection, complete the steps below.

Note:

You can only delete metric connections in the graph view.

  1. Open the plan editor.
  2. Expand the drop-down menu named after the plan and choose Configure plan.

    The plan configuration opens to the general plan settings tab by default.

  3. Click Dashboard and choose Metrics from the drop-down list.

    The metrics configuration opens in the graph view Graph view.

  4. Click the Edit connection button Edit connection on the connection between two metrics.

    A dialog box appears.

  5. Click the delete button Delete and confirm the deletion.
Note:

Metrics must be connected to another metric. If metrics are disconnected after deleting a connection, they are highlighted in red in the metrics graph.

Existing metric values

Existing metric values represent the current state before any planning activity occurs. Existing metric values are stored as point features in the plan database. If you develop a parcel that has existing metric values, values are subtracted from the metric values generated by the new development.

Note:

  • If you develop a parcel with a custom building and want to subtract existing metric values from the metric values generated by the new development, you must demolish the parcel. See Draw new building spaces to learn more.
  • If a parcel, or a part of it, is demolished, all metric values within the demolish area are subtracted.
  • For metrics that are configured to be rounded to whole numbers, existing metric values are rounded per data point. See the Configure a metric section above to learn more.
  • Existing metric values of aggregated metrics cannot be calculated from the existing metric values of the involved source metrics. Add dedicated existing metric values for aggregated metrics.

Import existing metric values

To import existing metric values from a hosted feature layer, complete the following steps:

  1. Open the plan editor.
  2. Expand the drop-down menu named after the plan and choose Configure plan.

    The plan configuration opens to the general plan settings tab by default.

  3. Click Dashboard and choose Metric values from the drop-down list.
  4. Click Add in the Existing data column for a metric listed in the Metric values table to open the From feature layer dialog box.
    1. In the Layer step, search for the layer that contains the existing metric values. Click the layer and click Next to continue.

      • You can import existing metric values from point, polygon, and polyline feature layers.
      • The point features representing the existing metric values are converted to the coordinate system of the urban model if the coordinate systems don't match.
      • Urban automatically skips the next step if you are importing data from a feature layer without sublayers.

    2. Optionally, in the Sublayer step, select a sublayer. Click Next to continue.
    3. In the Fields step, use the Fields in source drop-down menu to configure the source field that contains the existing metric values.
    4. Optionally, use the Units in source drop-down menu to configure the units in the existing data source.
    5. If you are importing values from a hosted feature layer that does not contain point features, choose how line features or polygon features with existing values will be converted to point features.

      • Centroids—Import points as centroids of the input geometry. If the centroid is outside the geometry, a reasonable point inside the geometry is used instead.
      • Equally distanced points—Distribute the source value to equidistant points along a grid. No point is created if its value is 0.

    6. In the Fields step, click Next.

      The dialog box displays the number of features validated in the data source and the number of features imported to the urban database. The numbers can be different if one of the following applies:

      • You import existing metric values from a hosted feature layer containing line features.
      • You import existing metric values from a hosted feature layer containing polygon features.

    7. In the Import step, click OK to confirm the successful import and to close the dialog box.

Manually add existing metric values

To manually add existing metric values, complete the following steps:

  1. Open the plan editor.
  2. Use the scenario switcher in the header to switch to the Existing scenario.
  3. Click the Dashboard button Dashboard in the header.
  4. Ensure that there are metrics in the dashboard.

    If the dashboard is empty, follow the instructions in Edit the dashboard to add metrics to the dashboard.

  5. Click a metric in the dashboard.

    If there are existing metric values for the selected metric, you will see blue pins in the view. Each pin represents an existing metric value.

  6. Click Edit geometry Edit geometry on the workflow toolbar at the right of the view, and from the Edit geometry tools in the header, click Add geometry Add geometry.
  7. Click the map to place an existing metric value pin.
  8. Click OK.
  9. Click the pin you just added to select it.
  10. Input the existing metric value for that pin in the Selected existing values section in the side panel.

    Note:
    If rounding is enabled on the metric, the existing metric value will be rounded as well.

  11. Click Close Close in the upper right corner of the side panel.

    The dashboard is displayed again. Instead of going back to the dashboard, you can also continue adding existing metric values.

Manually edit existing metric values

To manually edit existing metric values, complete the following steps:

  1. Open the plan editor.
  2. Use the scenario switcher in the header to switch to the Existing scenario.
  3. Click the Dashboard button Dashboard in the header.
  4. Ensure that there are metrics in the dashboard.

    If the dashboard is empty, follow the instructions in Edit the dashboard to add metrics to the dashboard.

  5. Click a metric in the dashboard that has existing metric values.

    If there are existing metric values for the selected metric, blue pins are displayed in the view. Each pin represents an existing metric value.

  6. Click a blue pin to select it.
  7. Edit the existing metric value for the selected pin in the Selected existing values section in the side panel.

    Note:
    If rounding is enabled on the metric, the existing metric value will be rounded as well.

  8. Click Close Close in the upper right corner of the side panel.

    The dashboard is displayed again. Instead of going back to the dashboard, you can also continue editing existing metric values.

Dashboard

Use the dashboard to visualize and explore the metrics you configured. Select a chart type that fits best for the metrics.

Access the dashboard

To access the dashboard where you can visualize and analyze the metrics of a plan scenario, complete the following steps:

  1. Open the plan editor.
  2. From the scenario switcher in the header, select a scenario.
  3. Click the Dashboard button Dashboard in the upper right corner of the header.

    If the dashboard is empty, see Edit the dashboard to learn how to add metrics to and configure the dashboard.

  4. Choose from the following options:
    • Don't select parcels—The dashboard shows metric values for the parcels inside the study area. If parcels are (partially) outside the study area, their metric values are excluded from the values displayed in the dashboard and a warning label appears in the side panel header. Hover over the warning label to highlight those parcels.
    • Select a subset of parcels—The dashboard includes the metric values of all selected parcels.
  5. Click a metric to get more details about it.

    There are two sections in the side panel:

    • The upper section named after the metric shows the metric chart, a description, and how the metric is calculated.
    • The lower section, Explore, allows you to explore the metric and its values in more detail. This section is only shown in scenarios and not in Existing.

  6. Explore the metric and its values using the Explore section of the side panel.
    • Select Space use to see a histogram about the space-use types that contribute to the selected metric and how much each type contributes.
      Note:

      The map only colors the spaces that contribute to the selected metric in their corresponding space-use type color.

    • Select Metric values > Parcels to see how much each developed parcel contributes to the selected metric.
      Note:

      The map colors the spaces per parcel according to how much the spaces on each parcel contribute to the selected metric. The darker the spaces on a parcel, the higher the contribution.

    • Select Metric values > Spaces to see the relative contribution of each space-use type to the selected metric per area.
      Note:

      The map colors the spaces per space-use type by the contribution of their type to the selected metric per area. The darker the space, the higher the contribution per area.

  7. Click Close Close in the upper right corner of the side panel.

    The standard dashboard view is displayed.

Edit the dashboard

To edit the dashboard, complete the following steps:

  1. Open the plan editor.
  2. Click the Dashboard button Dashboard in the upper right corner of the header.
  3. Click the Edit dashboard button Edit dashboard at the upper right of the dashboard side panel.
  4. Check the check box next to a metric that you want to display in the dashboard.

    Repeat this step for every metric that you want displayed in the dashboard.

  5. Click the Select chart type button Select chart type next to a metric to configure the chart type for that metric if it is to be displayed in the dashboard.

    The Select chart type side panel appears.

  6. Click a chart type from the list of chart types.
  7. Click OK.

    The Select chart type side panel closes.

  8. Click the Edit dashboard button Edit dashboard at the upper right of the dashboard side panel.

    Your changes to the dashboard are saved. The standard dashboard view is displayed.

Note:

The dashboard view is the same for all scenarios of the plan.

Land-use potential

The potential metric values are only calculated on land-use plans. The potential is calculated based on the parcel area combined with the underlying land use and its allowed space-use types weighted by target distribution. It also takes into account the potential net area, which is calculated as shown below. The potential net area calculation is different depending on whether the space-use type is residential or nonresidential:

  • Residential—Potential net area = a * r * f
  • Nonresidential—Potential net area = a * n

where

  • a = parcel area * net area factor of land-use type * allowed space-use types weighted by target distribution * net area factor of space-use types
  • r = maximum dwelling units density of land-use type
  • f = gross floor area per dwelling unit of space-use type
  • n = maximum floor area ratio of land-use type

Note:

The potential net area used in the land-use potential calculation differs from the net area that is used to calculate metric values. When calculating metric values, the net area used for the calculation originates from the space-use type of actual spaces.

To calculate the land-use potential value, the potential net area is then divided by or multiplied with the metric parameter. The parameter can be a constant or space-use type dependent. See Edit a metric connection to learn more about the options to configure metric parameters.

The following table includes examples for how the land-use potential value is calculated for some of the metrics that are available when setting up a new urban model based on the USA Default template. See Set up ArcGIS Urban to learn more.

Note:
  • The dashboard of land-use plans shows the land-use potential. Explore metric values from future developments by clicking the metric.
  • If a rounding method is defined on the metric, land-use potential values are rounded as well. See the Configure a metric section above to learn more.

Export data to a spreadsheet

You can export the metric values and various numbers about space-use types, zoning types (on zoning plans only), and land-use types (on land-use plans only) of each scenario to a spreadsheet. You can export either the numbers of all scenarios or the numbers of a selected subset of parcels in a scenario.

To export data to a spreadsheet, complete the following steps:

  1. Open the plan editor.
  2. Click the Dashboard button Dashboard in the upper right corner of the header.
  3. Export the numbers of all scenarios or export the numbers of a selected subset of parcels:
    • To export the numbers of all scenarios, don't select any parcel in the view.
    • To export the numbers of the selected parcels, select the parcels of interest in the scenario.
  4. Click the Download button Download in the upper right corner of the header.

    A spreadsheet is downloaded.

    • If you did not select any parcels, the spreadsheet contains the metric numbers as well as space-use types and zoning types and land-use types statistics for all scenarios.
    • If you selected parcels, the spreadsheet contains the metric numbers of the selected parcels as well as space-use types statistics.
