Manage versioned data

In an enterprise geodatabase with multiple editors, versions allow you to work with the same data at the same time without applying locks or duplicating data. Versions give each editor their own unique, isolated view of the data. Versioning facilitates long transactions by allowing editors to work isolated within their own version of the geodatabase and across multiple edit sessions. Once an editor finishes a collection of edits, they can merge their changes back to the parent version from which their version was created. The original parent of all versions in a geodatabase is called the default version.

Note:

ArcGIS Web Editor supports branch versioning. Traditional versioning is not supported.

The ArcGIS Advanced Editing user type extension and Version Management privilege are required to manage versions.

In Web Editor, versions are managed in the Versioning pane.

Open the Versioning pane

The Versioning pane allows you to create, update, switch to, or delete a version.

To open the Versioning pane, complete the following steps:

  1. Open a map in Web Editor.

The map must include versioned data for the Versioning pane to be available.

  2. Do one of the following to open the pane:
    • On the Contents (dark) toolbar, click Versioning .
    • On the header, click the button displaying the current version name.

The Versioning pane appears. If you've previously used the Versioning pane in the current session, the pane may appear with a selected dataset expanded or the settings for a selected version.

  3. Click Back to return to the list of versioned datasets if necessary.

Create a version

You can create a version of a dataset and use the version when editing the data. Using your own version allows all editors to make edits simultaneously while maintaining the integrity of the default data version.

To create a version, complete the following steps:

  1. Open the Versioning pane.
  2. Click Manage versions for the dataset for which you want to create a version if necessary.
    Note:

If the incorrect dataset was already expanded, click Back to return to the list of versioned datasets.

  3. Click New version.
  4. Provide a name and description for the new version.
  5. For Access, choose one of the following:
    • Public—Any user who can access the portal can view the version and its data. If the feature layer is editable, any user with privileges to edit features can edit the data in the version.
    • Protected—Any user who can access the portal can view the version and the data it contains, but only the version owner or the version administrator can manage the version or edit the data in the version.
    • Private—Only the version owner or the version administrator can view the version and its data, manage the version, and edit the data in the version. This setting is only supported for named versions.
  6. Verify the Owner name and change it if necessary.
  7. Check or uncheck Switch to version if necessary.

When checked, Web Editor automatically switches to the new version when it is created.

  8. Click Save.

Switch versions

When you open a web map, the default version is enabled. You can switch to any of the existing versions that you own or have access to.

To switch the current version, complete the following steps:

  1. Open the Versioning pane.
  2. Do one of the following to switch the version:
    • If the Versioning pane appears showing a list of versioned datasets, click the menu below a dataset name and choose a version.
    • If the Versioning pane appears showing the available versions for a dataset, use the search bar to find a version and click Switch to version , or click Back to return to the list of versioned datasets and use the menu to switch the version.

The dataset updates to the chosen version.

Update a version

You can update the version settings, including the name, description, access, and owner.

Note:

The version settings cannot be updated for a version currently in use.

To update a version, complete the following steps:

  1. Open the Versioning pane.
  2. Click Manage versions for the layer in which you want to create a version if necessary.
    Note:

If the incorrect dataset was already expanded, click Back to return to the list of versioned datasets.

Information about the selected dataset appears, including the current version and available versions.

  3. Use the search bar to find the correct version if necessary.
  4. Click the menu button .
  5. Click Version settings.
  6. Update the Name, Description, Access, and Owner settings as necessary.
  7. Click Save.

Delete a version

Deleting a version permanently removes the version and any edits that were made to it.

Note:

The default version cannot be deleted. Other versions cannot be deleted while in use. You must switch to a different version before the current version can be deleted.

To delete a version, complete the following steps:

  1. Open the Versioning pane.
  2. Click Manage versions for the layer in which you want to delete a version if necessary.
    Note:

If the incorrect dataset was already expanded, click Back to return to the list of versioned datasets.

  3. Use the search bar to find the correct version if necessary.
  4. Click the menu button .
  5. Click Delete.
