Validate network topology

When a network topology is enabled, it is updated to reflect the state of the network at that point in time. As portions of the network are edited or modified, they become out of date in the network topology and are marked with dirty areas. Dirty areas are created to track the location of edits made to a network which need to be validated or corrected, and serve as an indicator that the content you see on the map does not match what is stored in the network topology. It is important to keep the network topology updated to perform analysis. This is done by validating the network topology.

You can use the Validate networks tool to validate features with dirty areas in the network topology of a utility network after edits have been made. The tool is primarily used to find inconsistencies between feature edits and the network topology as marked with dirty areas.

Note:

You must add dirty areas to the map in Map Viewer before using this tool.

Validate a network topology

To validate a network topology, complete the following steps:

  1. Open a map with a utility network in Web Editor.
  2. Click Utility Network Tools .

The map must contain a utility network to access Utility Network Tools.

The Utility Network toolbar appears in the map.

  3. Click Validate network .
  4. Click Validate network topology.
  5. Optionally, expand Current extent and choose Entire extent to validate the entire dataset.
  6. Click Validate.
  7. The network topology for the specified utility network extent is validated, and dirty areas are removed from the map.
Note:

If you still see dirty areas on the map, you can view validation errors by opening the Attributes pane for the dirty area feature that is not validated.
