Share a layer to ArcGIS

Note:

Some workflows may require specific privileges. For more information about user types, roles, and privileges, see the Accounts topic.

Sharing a layer created in ArcGIS for SharePoint is a quick way to share information with your organization or the ArcGIS community. See Content sharing for information about sharing ArcGIS content.

Share a layer

When you share a layer to ArcGIS, the layer represents a snapshot of the current data in the map. To create and maintain a link between SharePoint and ArcGIS, you must share the map while in edit mode and save the map before returning to run mode.

Note:
  • You can only share a map or a layer to ArcGIS if you are signed in to an ArcGIS account with a user type and role that includes privileges to create, analyze, and share content. Sharing must have been enabled by your organization's administrator. If you are unsure of your account permissions, contact your ArcGIS account administrator.
  • You can only share layers that have been created with SharePoint data. You cannot share reference layers to ArcGIS.

To share a layer to ArcGIS, complete the following steps:

  1. On the SharePoint page, activate edit mode.
  2. Sign in to your ArcGIS account if you are not already signed in.
  3. From the map tools, click Layers Layers.

The Layers pane appears with the Layers tab active.

  4. Click the Share layer button Share layer to open the Share layer tab.

    Note:

The Share layer option is active only if you select a layer that can be shared to ArcGIS. You can share data layers created with your data. You cannot share reference layers added from ArcGIS.

  5. In the Share layer pane, specify a title, relevant tags, and a brief description of the layer, and choose whether to share it with your content (private), everyone (public), your organization, or with groups to which you belong.

These values are used to display information about the layer in ArcGIS and are also used for searching.

  6. Click Share to share the layer to ArcGIS.

A progress window indicates the publishing process. Publishing may take several minutes depending on the amount of data in the layer. To cancel sharing, click the Cancel button Cancel to return to the Share layer pane.

When the layer has been shared successfully, a confirmation message appears, along with a link to view the shared layer in ArcGIS. Click Open to view the item details page in ArcGIS or click Copy link to copy the link.

  7. Click the Close button Close to close the pane.
  8. Click Save on the SharePoint page toolbar to save the SharePoint page.

    Note:

When you share a layer that was created using SharePoint data, any changes made and saved in ArcGIS are not reflected in the SharePoint map; only changes made to the SharePoint data are reflected in the map. To view those changes in ArcGIS, update the shared layer.

Update a shared layer

If you make changes to the data used to create a layer that you've shared, you can update the shared layer and republish it in ArcGIS.

To update a shared layer, complete the following steps:

  1. On the SharePoint page, activate edit mode.
  2. Make the necessary changes to the data used to create the layer.
  3. From the map tools, click Layers Layers.

The Layers pane appears with the Layers tab active.

  4. Click the Share layer button Share layer to open the Share layer tab.
  5. In the Share layer pane, modify the layer details as needed and click Update.

    Note:
The title of the shared layer cannot be updated.

A progress wheel indicates the updating process. When the layer has been successfully updated, a confirmation message appears.

  6. Click the Close button Close to close the pane.
  7. Click Save on the SharePoint page toolbar.
