Data Axle supplies and licenses a comprehensive portfolio of places—also known as points of interest (POI)—data that Esri uses to create ArcGIS Places Business Locations datasets for Canada and the United States and a Business Summary dataset for the United States. ArcGIS Places sourced from Data Axle focuses specifically on businesses.
The datasets contain the following:
- The Business Locations datasets contain nearly 1 million Canadian business records and over 13 million U.S. business records respectively.
- The Business Summary dataset includes the total count of businesses classified by 31 unique SIC Code industry groups by and 38 unique NAICS Code industry groups, including retail, entertainment, finance, and more. This data can be used to determine which businesses are needed in an area and which are well represented.
The data attributes available include the following information:
- Business name and location information
- Primary and secondary industrial classification codes (NAICS-based and SIC-based)
- Business type designation: independent, branch, headquarters, or kiosk
- Estimated annual sales volume and employee counts
- Shopping center name, brands, affiliations, and business headquarter information, when available
Vintage
Vintage for the data is as follows:
- Business Locations—June 2024
- Business Summary—June 2024
Update frequency
Update frequency for the datasets is as follows:
- Three times per year—Licensed ArcGIS products using an ArcGIS Online access method
- Annually—Licensed ArcGIS products with locally installed data
Available geographies
ArcGIS Places sourced from Data Axle are available for all 50 states in the United States and all provinces and territories of Canada.
To create this dataset, Esri uses the latitude/longitude values provided by Data Axle or geocodes Data Axle business addresses to place business points on the map. Most businesses can be located to rooftop or street centerline accuracy, but some can only be placed to city or ZIP code centroid-level accuracy. Therefore, not all points have an exact location. Prior to release, Esri removed some business records that do not meet quality requirements; for example, records that lack core location attributes.
Example use cases
ArcGIS Places sourced from Data Axle can be used for locating competitors, identifying marketing opportunities, proximity analysis, and more. Information about business listings and points of interest can help companies understand consumer behavior and preferences, which can help with decision-making. For example, retailers can use POI data to analyze the performance of their venues and to conduct market research.

Note:
It is important to take note of the number of credits required to access Business Locations. For more information, see the ArcGIS Online Credits by capability topic or the ArcGIS Location Platform Pricing topic (scroll to Business Search, Infographics, and Reports).NAICS and SIC
A key differentiator of ArcGIS Places sourced from Data Axle is the addition of two proprietary digits onto the standard government-provided industrial classification codes. These extra two digits, which produce an eight-digit NAICS code and a six-digit SIC code, provide additional detail about the business type.
For standard government NAICS and SIC code definitions, see the NAICS website and the SIC Manual.
