Set up resource files for ArcGIS Enterprise

If you are using ArcGIS for Office with ArcGIS Enterprise, it is recommended that you host the resource files required by ArcGIS for Office on your ArcGIS Enterprise portal. Hosting the resource files and retrieving them from your portal, rather than from ArcGIS Online, ensures that all features of ArcGIS for Office operate as expected behind a firewall. It also ensures access to custom geocoding services and other settings specific to your ArcGIS Enterprise organization.

If you are using ArcGIS Enterprise in a disconnected environment, some features may not be available on the portal—specifically those related to an outside internet connection. For example, a layer showing a live data feed from ArcGIS Online (such as traffic information) will not work on ArcGIS Enterprise in a disconnected environment because the data requires an active internet connection.

Note:

ArcGIS for Office supports ArcGIS Enterprise 10.7.1 or later; earlier versions are not supported. Learn more about compatibility with ArcGIS Enterprise.

To start working with ArcGIS for Office with ArcGIS Enterprise, do the following:

  • Host the resource files required by ArcGIS for Office on your ArcGIS Enterprise portal.
  • Set your ArcGIS for Office ArcGIS connection to point to your ArcGIS Enterprise portal instance.

Host the resource files

To use ArcGIS for Office with ArcGIS Enterprise, first host the JavaScript and other resource files required by ArcGIS for Office on your ArcGIS Enterprise portal.

Depending on the version of your ArcGIS Enterprise portal instance and the operating system on which it is installed, there are different ways to do this.

Note:

To have localized ArcGIS for Office help on your portal, you must download and install the Portal Resources for the desired language. To have help available in multiple languages, download and install the Portal Resources for each language.

Linux

For portals on operating systems other than Windows, you must manually host the files on the network.

Note:

You must be a system administrator to perform these tasks. You must have the permissions required to modify files on the computer running the ArcGIS for Office portal web resources and the ability to host and make changes to a web server on your network.

To manually host the files on your network, do the following:

  1. Browse to the ArcGIS for Office download page.
  2. In the Is this for an ArcGIS Enterprise implementation? section, click Yes.
  3. From the ArcGIS Enterprise operating system drop-down menu, choose Linux.

The download package contains a folder named office.

  9. Create a folder structure that corresponds to the version of ArcGIS for Office you're installing, for example, <portal installation directory>/arcgisforoffice/2021.2/.
  10. Copy the office folder from the extracted .zip file and paste it into the new folder on your portal machine, for example: <portal installation directory>/arcgisforoffice/2021.2/office.
  11. Set your ArcGIS connection.

Set your ArcGIS connection

To connect ArcGIS Enterprise to ArcGIS for Office, you need the following information about your portal:

  • ArcGIS Enterprise portal server URL
  • Name of the web adaptor

For example, if your ArcGIS Enterprise portal server URL is https://myPortal.example.com, and your administrator configured your web adaptor to be arcgis, the URL to your ArcGIS Enterprise portal is https://myPortal.example.com/portal. By default, the web adaptor for the portal is arcgis, but it can be changed by your organization's administrator. If you are unsure of the name of your web adaptor, ask your ArcGIS Enterprise administrator.

To change the ArcGIS for Office configuration, do the following:

  1. Start Excel or PowerPoint. Click the File tab on the ribbon to display the Backstage view.
  2. Click ArcGIS.

The Advanced ArcGIS configuration page appears.

    ArcGIS configuration settings

By default, ArcGIS for Office uses ArcGIS Online.

  3. In the text box, provide the path for the location of the resource files on your ArcGIS Enterprise portal instance: for example, https://myPortal.example.com/portal/resources/arcgismapsforoffice/2021.2.

A message appears, confirming whether the path is valid.

  4. Open a map-enabled workbook and sign in to ArcGIS using your ArcGIS Enterprise credentials.
