In ArcGIS Pro, you can customize the Esri-provided navigation maps or create your own map with your organization's basemaps, road networks, assets, asset locators, and travel modes, and share this with your mobile workers to use when getting directions in Navigator. Choose one of the following exercises to learn how to create custom navigation maps:
- To add only your assets to an Esri-provided navigation map, see the Add assets exercise.
- To add your assets and create roads in an Esri-provided navigation map, see the Add assets and digitize roads exercise.
- To add your assets and load existing roads to an Esri-provided navigation map, see the Add assets and load roads exercise.
- To create a navigation map using your own road networks, see the Make a map with all your own data exercise.
Decide which exercise to follow
If you are unsure of the kind of navigation map to make, and thus which exercise to follow, first decide whether you want to create a map with entirely your own data or modify an Esri-provided navigation map.
Organizations that already have a complete, quality, up-to-date street dataset should follow Make a map with all your own data. An example of this type of user is a local government. Local governments usually own and update their own street dataset daily in order to provide common services.
If you don't have your own street dataset, or if your street dataset would need to be significantly enhanced to make it a network dataset that supports routing, you should follow one of the three exercises to modify an Esri-provided navigation map. You'll either need a license to use the ArcGIS StreetMap Premium dataset, or a license to use the StreetMap Premium Custom Roads dataset. Both are high-quality street datasets that you can combine with your organization's assets or roads.
To further determine which exercise to follow, consider whether your organization needs to include custom roads. If your organization does not typically use private roads to conduct its operations, you probably don't need to add roads to the Esri navigation map and should follow Add assets. An example of this type of organization is a fire department that mainly uses local roads that are already in the ArcGIS StreetMap Premium dataset and wants to add only assets such as fire hydrants to an Esri navigation map. This requires a license to use the ArcGIS StreetMap Premium dataset.
If your organization needs to include custom roads and does not have an existing road dataset, follow the Add assets and digitize roads exercise. For example, a real estate development company that recently built roads in a new subdivision and doesn't yet have a digital road dataset should follow this exercise. This requires a license to use the StreetMap Premium Custom Roads dataset.
If your organization needs to include custom roads and does have a quality road dataset, follow the Add assets and load roads exercise. For example, a utility company that has a private road dataset and asset data such as power line supports that they want to add to the map would be best served by this exercise. This also requires a license to use the StreetMap Premium Custom Roads dataset. Be aware that if your private road dataset has several problems, it may be more efficient to follow the Add assets and digitize roads exercise.
