Change the basemap

A basemap provides a background, or visual context, for the data in a map. For example, a basemap showing streets can provide context for your address data. ArcGIS includes several types of basemaps for use in ArcGIS Maps for Office, including aerial imagery, terrain, streets, and topographic data.

When you first insert a map into your Excel worksheet, the map displays the default basemap for your organization. The default basemap is determined by your ArcGIS administrator. You can change the basemap at any time to one of the other provided basemaps, but a basemap is required for all maps and cannot be removed. You cannot change the styling of a basemap.

To change the basemap, do the following:

  1. Click a map to select it.
  2. On the map toolbar, click the Basemap button Change basemap.

The basemap carousel opens, showing thumbnails of available basemaps. Click the forward and back arrows or the dots below the carousel to navigate through the carousel.

  3. Click a basemap to select it.

The map automatically displays the new basemap.
