Share a layer to ArcGIS

Note:

You need the following account and license types to use this workflow:

  • Microsoft license—You need a Microsoft 365 license, with the Contributor role or higher, to share a layer to ArcGIS.
  • ArcGIS account type—You must sign in to an ArcGIS account to complete the steps in this workflow.

Sharing a layer created in ArcGIS for Excel is a quick way to share information with your organization or the ArcGIS community.

See Content sharing for information about sharing ArcGIS content.

Share a layer

When you share a layer to ArcGIS, the layer represents a snapshot of the current data in the map.

Note:
  • You can only share a map or a layer to ArcGIS if you are signed in to an ArcGIS account with a user type and role that includes privileges to create, analyze, and share content. Sharing must have been enabled by your organization's administrator. If you are unsure of your account permissions, contact your ArcGIS account administrator.
  • To share a heat map layer to an ArcGIS Enterprise portal, you must use ArcGIS Enterprise 10.8 or later. Earlier versions of ArcGIS Enterprise do not support heat map layers.
  • Ensure that the map layer names do not contain unsupported characters. For more information, see Data preparation.
  • If the map includes a layer with complex geometries, such as county boundaries, ArcGIS for Excel renders the layer in Excel, but sharing the layer to ArcGIS may cause the process to time out and fail.

To share a layer to ArcGIS, complete the following steps:

  1. Sign in to your ArcGIS account.
  2. From the Layers list, click Layer options Layer options.

    The layer options appear.

  3. From the Active layer drop-down menu, choose the layer to share.
  4. From the layer options, click Share layer Share layer.

    Note:

The Share layer option is active only if you select a layer that can be shared to ArcGIS. You can share data layers created with your data. You cannot share reference layers added from ArcGIS.

    The Share layer pane appears.

  5. In the Share layer pane, specify a title, relevant tags, and a brief description of the layer, and choose whether to share it with your content (private), everyone (public), your organization, or with groups to which you belong.

These values are used to display information about the layer in ArcGIS and are also used for searching.

  6. Click Share to share the layer to ArcGIS.

A progress wheel indicates the publishing process. Publishing may take several minutes depending on the amount of data in the layer. To cancel sharing, click Cancel to return to the Share layer pane.

When the layer has been shared successfully, a confirmation message appears, along with a link to view the shared layer in ArcGIS. Click the link to view the item page in ArcGIS. This page displays the title, tags, and description you provided.

  7. Click the Back button Back to return to the Layers list.

Update a shared layer

If you make changes to the data used to create a layer that you've shared, you can update the shared layer and republish it in ArcGIS.

To update a shared layer, complete the following steps:

  1. Make changes to the data used to create the layer.

The map automatically updates to reflect the changes.

  2. From the Layers list, click Layer options Layer options.

    The layer options appear.

  3. From the Active layer drop-down menu, choose the layer to update.
  4. From the layer options, click Share layer Share layer.

    The Share layer pane appears.

  5. In the Share layer pane, modify the layer details as needed and click Update.

    Note:
The title of the shared layer cannot be edited.

A progress wheel indicates the updating process. When the layer has been successfully updated, a confirmation message appears.

  6. Click the Back button Back to return to the Layers list.
  7. Save the worksheet.
