Each layer in a hosted feature layer contains an attribute table that stores the data for the layer. Each table contains rows (features) and columns (fields). How you interact with the attribute table of a hosted feature layer depends on your role in the organization and the layer's configuration. Most users can view the layers and use them in their maps and apps, but only the layer owner or an organization administrator can manage attribute fields.
View and interact with attributes
Anyone who is not the layer owner or an organization administrator can only interact with the attribute table's contents. If the hosted feature layer or hosted table has been shared with you and you are not an administrator, you can do the following with the attribute table's contents:
- View the table's contents, related records and photos, and statistics. See Show tables for more information.
- If the layer has editing enabled, you can update the contents of the attribute table. If the layer has attachments enabled, you can attach related photos or other files to specific features.
- If the layer has field descriptions, you can see those descriptions on the layer's item page. Open the item page for the hosted feature layer or hosted table and click the Data tab to access field descriptions.
Manage attribute fields
If you own the layer or are an organization administrator, you can view and edit data in the attribute table, and you can perform the following field management operations in Map Viewer:
- Add fields to or delete fields from the attribute table.
- Calculate field values.
Layer owners and organization administrators can also configure fields and save formatting changes to the layer item. Non-owners with whom a layer is shared can configure fields and save formatting changes to the web map.
Note:
Performing any of the operations above, except calculating field values, alters the hosted layer's schema. The Schema updated date that is on the Overview and Data tabs of the hosted feature layer or hosted table item page updates when the schema changes.
Configure fields
You can configure the field or fields you want to display by changing the display name and formatting the field values.
- On the Settings (light) toolbar, click Fields
. - Select the field you want to configure.
Tip:
You can select multiple fields of the same type to configure their formatting at the same time.- Change the display name of the field.

Note:
Under Thousand separator, select Use locale preference from the drop-down menu to dynamically display thousands separators based on the viewer's locale.

Note:
Under Hour format, select Use locale preference from the drop-down menu to dynamically display time in 12- or 24-hour format based on the viewer's locale.
