Manage output layers

Real-time and big data analytics in ArcGIS Velocity can write features to new or existing ArcGIS layers. The layers created can be managed in the Velocity app on the Layers page. Once created, feature, map image, and stream layers are available for use in Velocity and ArcGIS maps and apps.

• The Feature Layer (new) output writes features to a new feature layer.
• The Feature Layer (existing) output writes features to an existing feature layer that was created by Velocity.
• The Stream Layer output sends features to a new stream layer.

Note:

• Output layers created by either real-time or big data analytics do not appear on the Layers page until the analytic is started and successfully creates the output.
• Output layers hosted by Velocity can be shared with organization groups or with the entire organization. They cannot be shared publicly. To grant access to external users, add them to a group in the organization in which the layer is hosted and share the layer with the group.

Work with output layers

To work with the output layers created by real-time or big data analytics, click Layers under the Output section on the main menu of the Velocity app. On the Layers page, you can view item details and open the corresponding REST endpoint of a layer as well. You can filter layers using the search option and view the results in either a table or grid. You can do the following on the Layers page:

• To view or edit the associated item details in ArcGIS Online, either click the name of the layer in the list or expand the menu button and click View item details. A new browser tab opens with the associated ArcGIS Online item details for the layer. You can modify the properties of the layer including sharing settings, tags, item description, and so on.

  Note:

  Changing sharing or ownership for items created by Velocity can take up to five minutes to take effect.

• To access the associated REST API endpoint of the layer, expand the menu button and click Open in REST Services directory. The service endpoint appears in a new browser tab.

View output layers

To view the output layers created by real-time or big data analytics, click Layers under the Output section on the main menu of the Velocity app. On the Layers page, you can view the title type and corresponding dataset associated with each layer. You can filter layers using the search option and view the results in either a table or grid.

• To view an output layer in a web map, click Open in map viewer. A new browser tab appears and displays a web map with the output layer.

Delete output layers

When working with output layers in Velocity, you can delete a feature layer, map image layer, or stream layer created by an analytic. Keep in mind that when a feature layer is deleted all the data associated with the layer is deleted.

Note:

• Deleting a feature layer cannot be undone and all data is deleted.
• When deleting a map image layer, the data is not deleted. A map image layer is a visualization of the data and is tied to the life cycle of the feature layer. A map image layer can be deleted without deleting the underlying data.

Delete an output layer from the Layers page

To delete a layer from the Layers page, click the Action > Delete. Confirm that you want to delete the layer.

Note:

When deleting a feature layer, the data and associated map image layers are also deleted. This action cannot be undone and all data is deleted.

Delete an output layer in an analytic

Feature layers created by real-time or big data analytics can also be deleted from the analytic editor if the analytic is not actively running. To delete the output layer in an analytic, open the Real-Time or Big Data analytic option associated with the layer. Right-click the output node, choose Delete feature layer, and confirm you want to delete the layer.

Note:

• When deleting a feature layer, the data and associated map image layers are also deleted. This action cannot be undone and all data is deleted.
• Stream layers cannot be deleted in an analytic.

Delete protection

If delete protection is enabled on items created in Velocity and you try to delete the items from Velocity, an error message appears indicating that delete protection must be turned off from the item details page to delete the item.

If delete protection is used on output layers, it is recommended that you add delete protection on both the feature layer and its associated map image layer. If a feature layer does not have delete protection enabled but the associated map image layer does, when the feature layer is deleted, the map image layer remains but does not have an associated dataset. This will be addressed in a later release of Velocity.
