Explore the example city

Use the example city of Boston to explore the capabilities of ArcGIS Urban. It includes example data as well as example plans and projects. Everyone can open and view the example city. To explore the full functionality of ArcGIS Urban, you must create your own copy of any of the exemplary plans or projects. This requires an Urban license. See License ArcGIS Urban for details.

Open the example city

Complete the following steps to open the example city:

  1. Visit the Urban landing page.
  2. Click Open example.

    The urban model of the Boston example city opens.

    Note:

Work with example plans and projects

The plans and projects in the example city are read-only. To work with them, you must fulfill the following requirements:

  • Use an ArcGIS Online account that has an Urban license assigned. See License ArcGIS Urban for details.
  • Use an ArcGIS Online account that has privileges to publish hosted feature layers.
  • Create a copy of an example plan or project.

Note:
  • Content in the example city cannot be shared.
  • The public engagement feature is not available for content in the example city.

Copy an example plan

Complete the following steps to copy an example plan:

  1. Open the example city.
  2. Click Plans.

    A list of available plans appears.

  3. Select a plan.

    The plan opens.

  4. Click the Create a copy button in the blue header.

    The Save plan as dialog box appears.

  5. Optionally, edit the name of the plan and click OK.

    The copied plan opens.

    Note:

    Copying a plan creates a new plan in a separate ArcGIS Online feature layer with you as the owner.

Copy an example project

Complete the following steps to copy an example project:

  1. Open the example city.
  2. Click Projects.

    A list of available projects appears.

  3. Select a project.

    The project opens.

  4. Click the project name and select Save project as duplicate from the drop-down menu.

    The Save project as dialog box appears.

  5. Optionally, edit the name of the project and click OK.

    The copied project opens.

    Note:

    Copying a project creates a new project in a separate ArcGIS Online feature layer with you as the owner.
