Select by attribute

Selecting by attribute allows you to select features using a query expression. The query expression uses one or more conditions to determine which features are selected. Each query includes a field name, an operator, and a value.

To select by attribute, complete the following steps:

  1. From the map tools, click the Selection button Selection tool.

    The Selection pane appears.

  2. Click the Select by attribute button Select by attribute.
  3. Choose a layer from the Active layer drop-down menu.
  4. In the Select features where section, click the Add new button.
  5. Select the parameters for the first condition in the expression as follows:
    1. Click the field selector and select the field on which to build the condition.
    2. Click the operator selector and select an operator, such as is, is not, includes, excludes, or contains.

The available conditions depend on the type of field (numeric or categorical).

    3. In the value input box, provide a value to use in the expression by typing a value, using the arrows to select available numeric values, or use the drop-down menu to select available categoric values.
      Tip:

A count of features that match the input appears next to the value on the drop-down menu.

  6. Optionally, add conditions to the expression by doing one of the following:
    • Click Add new and repeat the previous step for each new condition.

By default, the conditions are connected with an AND operator, meaning all conditions must be met to select a feature. Click the OR button to change the conditions to be connected with an OR operator, meaning any of the conditions can be met to select a feature.

    • Click the Add condition button Add condition and repeat the previous step for the new condition in your condition group.

By default, the conditions are connected with an AND operator, meaning all conditions must be met to select a feature. Click the OR button to change the conditions to be connected with an OR operator, meaning any of the conditions can be met to select a feature.

You can delete any condition, condition group, or condition within a group by clicking the Delete button Delete. When multiple conditions are added in the expression, you can click Clear all to start over.
