Insights supports adding layers, files, and data from database, OneDrive, and SharePoint connections.
Layers
The following layers are supported in Insights:
- Hosted or registered feature layers from your content, groups, or organization
- Feature layers from ArcGIS Living Atlas of the World
- Map image layers
- Local layers (supported in Insights desktop)
Note:
Map image layers require that the Feature Access capability be enabled to support statistics. If statistics are not supported, you cannot use many Insights features, including creating charts. See Troubleshoot a map image layer for tips on how to ensure that statistics are supported when you publish a map image layer. For more information, see Set map service properties and Editor permissions for feature services.
Map image layers must also have standardized query enabled. To enable standardized query, the layer must be published as a dynamic service rather than a tile layer.
Limitations
The following limitations apply to layers in Insights:
- Insights in ArcGIS Online does not support consuming on-premises feature services that are not internet accessible.
- Insights may not work with the following:
- Multipoint geometries
- Multipatch geometries
- Feature layers from ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Enterprise with a definition expression or feature layers that use an ArcGIS Arcade expression
- Query layers
- Feature layers with editor tracking enabled (Insights in ArcGIS Online and Insights in ArcGIS Enterprise)
Files
The following file formats are supported:
- Microsoft Excel workbook (.xlsx)
- Comma-separated values (CSV) file (.csv)
- Shapefile in a compressed (.zip) folder
- File geodatabase in a compressed (.zip) folder (Insights desktop only)
- GeoJSON (.json, .geojson, or GeoJSON files in a compressed [.zip] folder)
Note:
Compressed files must use UTF-8 or CP437 character encoding.
Each compressed folder can contain more than one file. However, all files in a compressed folder must be the same format (for example, all shapefiles or all GeoJSON files).
Limitations
The following limitations apply to files in Insights:
- In Insights in ArcGIS Online, uploaded files can be no larger than 100 MB. If you choose a file that is larger than 100 MB, you will receive an error message.
- Files in CSV format only support one table per sheet. If your .csv file contains multiple tables per sheet, you should convert it to an Excel workbook or move the extra tables to their own sheets.
Troubleshooting
If you use Insights in ArcGIS Enterprise with a public key infrastructure (PKI) authentication and your files fail to upload, it may mean that the value of the uploadReadAheadSize property needs to be increased on your IIS web server. For more information, see Frequently asked questions about distributed collaboration.
OneDrive
Note:
OneDrive is available in Insights in ArcGIS Online and Insights in ArcGIS Enterprise.
The following file types are supported for OneDrive:
- Microsoft Excel files (.xlsx)
- Comma-separated values files (.csv)
- Shapefiles (.zip)
- GeoJSON files (.json, .geojson, or GeoJSON files in a .zip file)
Limitations
In Insights in ArcGIS Online, files from OneDrive have a maximum size limit of 100 MB.
SharePoint
Note:
SharePoint is available in Insights in ArcGIS Online and Insights in ArcGIS Enterprise.
The following file types are supported for SharePoint:
- Microsoft Excel files (.xlsx)
- Comma-separated values files (.csv)
- Shapefiles (.zip)
- GeoJSON files (.json, .geojson, or GeoJSON files in a .zip file)
- SharePoint subsites
- SharePoint document libraries
- SharePoint lists
Databases
Note:
Database connections are available in Insights in ArcGIS Enterprise and Insights desktop.
Connections to the following databases are supported:
- Google BigQuery
- Microsoft SQL Server
- Oracle
- PostgreSQL
- SAP HANA
- Snowflake
- Relational databases that use a Java Database Connectivity (JDBC) driver
- Enterprise geodatabases
The following data types are supported from database connections:
- Spatial tables
- Nonspatial tables
- Relational database views
Limitations
Insights does not support datasets and enterprise geodatabases that are registered as versioned. You should unregister a dataset as versioned before using it in Insights.
Troubleshooting
Spatial database tables must meet the following requirements to be supported in Insights:
- Each table can have only one spatial field.
- Features must have a valid geometry or geography (null or invalid features are not supported).
- Features must have a spatial reference identifier (SRID).
- All features in the field must have the same SRID.
- All features in the field must have the same geometry type.
