Esri provides three ArcGIS Places datasets for Puerto Rico and the United States sourced from data supplied by Data Axle and SafeGraph. See Compare United States ArcGIS Places to compare these datasets.
- Business Locations—Sourced from data supplied by Data Axle. This dataset contains point-based locations of individual businesses, including attributes such as the company name, address, and business or industry category. It can be used to provide information about a location or a business, or about the regional distribution of businesses by category. See the Data Axle topic for a full list of available business attributes.
Note:
This data cannot be used for direct mailing purposes.

- Business Summary—Derived from the Business Locations dataset, the Business Summary dataset contains aggregated counts of businesses by type within defined areas. It is useful for quantifying business types in a region. Business Summary values can be estimated
for any user-defined polygon—such as rings and drive times—using
Esri data enrichment capabilities in various ArcGIS products.
Note:
Records flagged as a kiosk are not included in Business Summary calculations. Examples of kiosks include ATMs, electric charging stations, donation drop boxes, mailboxes, and video rental kiosks. Kiosk-flagged records can be found in the Business Locations point-based dataset but are omitted from Business Summary calculations.

Note:
In early 2026, Esri will discontinue support for the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) based Business Summaries. North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) based Business Summaries will continue to be supported.
- Points of Interest—The Points of Interest datasets sourced from data supplied by SafeGraph contain approximately 135,000 Puerto Rican points of interest and more than 18 million points of interest in the United States. Available attributes include the place-name, location, an industrial classification code, and brand (when applicable). See the SafeGraph topic for a full list of available point of interest attributes.

Release date
The Business Summary, Business Locations, and Points of Interest datasets were updated in October 2025; the vintage is August 2025.
Base level geography
The Business Locations and Points of Interest datasets base level geography use point data derived from latitude/longitude coordinates.
Sample questions and use cases
The Esri ArcGIS Places datasets can be used to determine which businesses are well represented in an area and which are under-represented, or to compare and analyze data across companies, regions, or industries effectively. ArcGIS Places data also supports activities such as market analysis, site selection, customer segmentation, and competitive analysis.
Sample questions that can be answered using the Esri ArcGIS Places datasets may include the following:
- What is the overall coffee shop density in Shreveport?
- Which industries are the most prevalent in southwestern St. Louis?
- How many similar businesses are near this address? Can I categorize them by NAICS code?
- How many gas stations are in this ZIP code?
- What are the total sales for similar restaurants in this neighborhood?
Example use cases for Esri ArcGIS Places data include the following:
![]() | A retail chain can use the Esri ArcGIS Places datasets to find the best location for a new store by identifying areas with high concentrations of potential customers based on existing target demographics and the current retail landscape. |
![]() | Companies can use Esri ArcGIS Places data to evaluate the competitive landscape around existing or proposed store sites by mapping the locations of their competitors. This can help determine the retail opportunity for any location and estimate a new store’s sales volume. |
