Use Recreation Outreach

The Recreation Outreach solution delivers a set of capabilities that help you understand recreation license trends, engage the public about their recreation experiences, and promote recreation opportunities to the public.

In this topic, you’ll learn how to use the solution by assuming the role of a user and performing the workflows below.

Explore outdoor destinations

Recreation Outreach contains multiple locator apps for the general public to find recreation opportunities and license information. Members of the public can search for an address or click the corresponding map to find information about parks, trails, water resources, wildlife resources, or recreation license locations.

You are a member of the public and want to learn what recreation opportunities are in your area. You will use the locator apps in the Recreation Outreach solution to find outdoor destinations.

Find park opportunities

  1. Browse to the Outdoor Recreation site.
  2. Find the Park Locator card and click the Explore button to launch the Park Locator.
  3. Enter your address in the search box or pan and zoom to an area of the map you are interested in.
  4. Click the Filter button and select characteristics to limit results based on your selected criteria.
  5. Select the location of interest from the list and review information provided.
  6. Click on the Directions tab to view driving directions to the recreation opportunity from your defined location.

Find trail opportunities

  1. Browse to the Outdoor Recreation site.
  2. Find the Trail Locator card and click the Explore button to launch the Trail Locator.
  3. Enter your address in the search box or pan and zoom to an area of the map you are interested in.
  4. Click the Filter button and select characteristics to limit results based on your selected criteria.
  5. Select the location of interest from the list and review information provided.
  6. Click on the Directions tab to view driving directions to the recreation opportunity from your defined location.

Find fishing and boating opportunities

  1. Browse to the Outdoor Recreation site.
  2. Find the Water Resource Locator card and click the Explore button to launch the Water Resource Locator .
  3. Enter your address in the search box or pan and zoom to an area of the map you are interested in.
  4. Click the Filter button and select characteristics to limit results based on your selected criteria.
  5. Select the location of interest from the list and review information provided.
  6. Click on the Directions tab to view driving directions to the recreation opportunity from your defined location.

Find hunting opportunities

  1. Browse to the Outdoor Recreation site.
  2. Find the Wildlife Resource Locator card and click the Explore button to launch the Wildlife Resource Locator .
  3. Enter your address in the search box or pan and zoom to an area of the map you are interested in.
  4. Click the Filter button and select characteristics to limit results based on your selected criteria.
  5. Select the location of interest from the list and review information provided.
  6. Click on the Directions tab to view driving directions to the recreation opportunity from your defined location.

Develop recreation inventory

The Recreation Inventory app can be used by recreation staff to create and update recreation information shared with the public. Existing recreation assets collected in the field can be reviewed and information added to help internal staff and the general public find information about recreation opportunities. New recreation assets can also be added to a recreation inventory using imagery and record documents.

You will assume the role of recreation staff in a local government department. In this workflow, you are asked to review recreation assets and add new recreation assets. The steps below provide guidance; however, you can enter information as you see fit and examine the different dependencies in the form.

Review recreation assets

  1. Sign in to your ArcGIS organization and browse to the Recreation Inventory app.
  2. Open the item page and click View Application.
  3. Open the Edit panel and click Edit feature.
  4. Select a trailhead on the map.
  5. In the panel, review the attribute information and enter the remaining details for the trailhead.
  6. Set Status to Open, Publicly Visible to Yes, and Reviewed to Yes.
  7. When you're finished, click Update.

Add a new recreation asset

  1. In the Recreation Inventory app, open the Edit panel, and click Add feature.
  2. Type Trails into the Filter types search box, and click the Trails feature template.
  3. Add a new trail to the map.
  4. Enter the following trail details:

  5. Scroll to the bottom of the form and click Add.
  6. Repeat all of the steps for each recreation asset.

Update recreation closure information

Communicating the status of recreation opportunities helps visitors plan trips and reduces congestion and overuse of resources. The Recreation Closure Manager app can be used by public information staff to create and update recreation closures.

Create recreation closure

  1. Sign in to your ArcGIS organization and browse to the Recreation Closure Manager app.
  2. Open the item page and click View Application.

    The Manage Recreation Closures widget is opened by default, which allows you to create and edit existing recreation closures.

  3. In the Search widget, type an address.
  4. In the Manage Recreation Closures widget, click the Closures template and add a new recreation closure to the map.
  5. Enter the following recreation closure details:

    Type Trail Maintenance.

    Choose Temporary Closure.

    Reason

    Choose Maintenance.

    When

    Type Winter 2021 to Spring 2022.

    Comment

    Type Trail closed Winter 2021 to Spring 2022.

  6. Click Save.

Update asset status

  1. Open the Update Public Status widget.
  2. Select the Freehand Polygon selection tool, and select the assets associated with the recreation closure.
  3. For Status, choose Closed.
  4. Click Save.
Note:

When you create recreation closures and update asset status information using the Recreation Closure Manager app, the recreation locators deployed with the Recreation Outreach solution will automatically be updated with the new information.

Review and prepare recreation license data

Staff can use the Recreation License Management ArcGIS Pro project and Recreation License Management Dashboard to organize, load, and review recreation license data. This allows staff to review this information spatially, which can provide an enhanced view and understanding of license trends.

You are a data analyst at a conservation agency responsible for analyzing trends in recreation license data. You are asked to use the Recreation License Management ArcGIS Pro project to prepare your data to share in the Recreation License Dashboard.

  1. Start ArcGIS Pro and open the Recreation License Management project.
  2. On the View tab, in the Windows group, click Catalog, and click Catalog Pane.
  3. In the Catalog pane, expand Tasks, and double-click the Recreation License Management task.
  4. In the Tasks pane, click the Getting Started task group to expand the collection of tasks.
  5. Click the Understanding Recreation License Management task to review the project.
  6. Follow the tasks provided in the Prepare License Data task group to format recreation license data.
  7. Follow the tasks provided in the Calculate License Information task group to summarize and load recreation license data.
