Collaborations extend the reach of your GIS content by enabling seamless sharing of layers, maps, apps, and more with other organizations. Collaborations are based on a foundation of trust between participating organizations and are typically motivated by common goals and initiatives.
Two types of collaborations can be established with other organizations: partnered collaborations and distributed collaborations.
Partnered collaboration
A partnered collaboration establishes trust between two or more ArcGIS Online organizations, enabling content to be shared securely. Participating organizations use groups to collaboratively add and edit content such as web maps and apps. Each organization continues to own and manage its own content while allowing the other to view and contribute. Partnered collaborations provide access to additional capabilities not supported by regular group sharing, including the following:
- The organization name is easily identifiable when viewing and searching for external members in the group.
- Members can search for and invite members from participating organizations to a partnered collaboration group.
- Members from participating organizations can edit and update maps, apps, and other content in a shared update group.
- Collaboration coordinators can be added to a partnered collaboration group without invitation.
- Collaboration coordinators can be promoted to group managers, allowing them to invite and add members to partnered collaboration groups and modify group settings.

Distributed collaboration
A distributed collaboration establishes trust between two ArcGIS Enterprise environments or an ArcGIS Online organization and one or more ArcGIS Enterprise environments. Participants use groups to share content and perform shared editing across organizations. Distributed collaborations can be useful for many workflows, including exposing ArcGIS Enterprise content to the public through ArcGIS Online, making data visible across different departments in an organization, and managing field data collections.
