In Scene tools
, use the Measure volume tool
(beta) to measure volumes and perform analysis, such as cut and fill volumes for roadway projects.
Measure volumes
To measure volumes, complete the following steps:
- Click Scene tools
to open the scene tools. - Click Measure volume
. - Under Mode, choose either Cut and Fill Volume or Stockpile Volume as the volume analysis to use.
You can alternate between the different types of analysis.
- Click in the scene to start adding points to the volume polygon.
- Double-click or press Enter to close the polygon and calculate the volume measurements. Alternatively, click the starting point again to close the polygon.
- Click New measurement to start a new measurement.
Tip:
Press the Ctrl key to temporarily disable snapping to the orange visual cues. Release the Ctrl key to enable snapping again.View volume analysis
Under Mode, you can view the following types of volume analysis:
| Mode | Description |
|---|---|
Cut and Fill Volume | Calculate cut and fill volumes based on the provided elevation of a horizontal surface relative to the defined volume polygon. This mode is ideal for estimating the amount of material to remove or add to level terrain for construction. |
Stockpile Volume | Calculate cut and fill volumes relative to a surface estimated from the defined volume polygon control points. This mode is useful for estimating the volume of temporary ground features such as piles of material, mounds, or depressions. |
The following measurements are displayed:

|---|---|
Cut volume | The volume of ground that will be removed, based on the provided elevation of a horizontal surface relative to the defined volume polygon. |
Fill volume | The volume of ground that will be added, based on the provided elevation of a horizontal surface relative to the defined volume polygon. |
Net volume | The difference between the cut volume and fill volume. |
Area | The area of the volume polygon. |
Perimeter | The perimeter of the volume polygon. |
Adjust measurements
To adjust the measurement, hover over a point and drag it. As you drag points, Scene Viewer displays the adjusted values in the scene and panel. When you hover over the elevation handle you can press Tab to enter the input mode and manually adjust the elevation.
In Settings
, you can adjust the units of volume measurement such as Elevation unit and Volume unit and whether they are in feet or meters, for example.
Note:
- The volume measurement analysis does not support transparent layers.
- The results of the tool vary depending on the zoom level, as changes in zoom level affect the level of detail (LOD) of the scene geometry.
- If the view is too close or too far from the measurement polygon, the results will not be computed due to LOD-induced inaccuracies.
