Add United States demographic data

Note:

You need the following account and license types to use this workflow:

  • Microsoft license—You need a Microsoft 365 license, role Contributor or higher, to add United States demographic data to maps.
  • ArcGIS account type—Standard users can perform all the functions of this workflow; you do not need to sign in.

You can add United States demographic data to a map.

See Reference layers to learn about adding content from ArcGIS to a map.

Standard users of ArcGIS for Power BI can add United States demographic data to a map to provide additional context to Microsoft Power BI data; users with an ArcGIS account should use the Add content from ArcGIS workflow.

Tip:

Standard users can add one reference layer type to the map and must remove that type to add another. If you are signed in to an ArcGIS account, you can add multiple reference layers of each type.

Note:

ArcGIS for Power BI typically filters out unsupported item types from the layer gallery. If you are a Standard user, the reference layer you add to the map must be a feature service that contains a single layer. If you cannot find the specific item, verify that the layer is saved as a single-layer feature service in ArcGIS. When you sign in to your ArcGIS account, the reference layer gallery shows all supported item types.

To add United States demographic data to a map, complete the following steps:

  1. From the map tools, click Analysis Analysis.

    The analysis tools appear.

  2. Click Reference layer Reference layer.

    The Reference Layer pane appears.

  3. Click Add Add and select a United States demographic layer to add to the map.

The layer is added to the map and the Layers list.

  4. To remove the United States demographic layer from the map, click Remove Remove.

Alternatively, from the Layers list, select the layer, click Layer options Layer options, and click Delete Delete.

Tip:
Once you've added a reference layer to a map, you can create a join between the reference layer and Power BI data attributes to gain insight into the data. You can also use the Drill through function to connect the reference layer to other visualizations.
