Work with images

ArcGIS Online    |

You can upload an image file such as a scanned paper map or a site plan to a project scenario. The image file doesn't need to be georeferenced. Use the Transform and Reshape image tools to position it at its geographical location.

Licensed users with editing permissions and users with an ArcGIS Hub community account can do the following when working with images in Urban:

Upload an image

To upload an image file to a project scenario, complete the following steps:

  1. Open the project editor.
  2. Click the Development button Development mode from the buttons at the left of the view.

    The development mode toolbar appears.

  3. In the left toolbar, select the Upload option Upload.

    Your file browser opens.

  4. Locate the image file on your computer and upload it.

Urban only supports JPG, JPEG, and PNG image formats. Additionally, the image has to be smaller than 2048x2048 pixels.

    • The Upload in progress notification banner appears at the bottom of the screen. Once the image file is successfully uploaded, the File uploaded successfully banner appears instead.
    • By default, the image is placed in the center of the view.

  5. Click Resize and rotation to start positioning the image. See Transform an image and Reshape an image for details.

Alternatively, click the Close button Close on the banner if you don't want to change the image position.

Note:

  • An image that you upload to Urban is stored as a media layer item in your portal account.
  • When you upload an image, the media layer item gets the same sharing level assigned as the project. If you update the sharing level of a project after uploading an image, the sharing level of the media layer is also updated if you are the owner of the project and the media layer. If that's not the case, a dialog box notifies you about media layers where the sharing level cannot be updated.
  • To switch an image on or off when you're editing or viewing a project, click the image name in the Context layers section of the Layers list. To open the Layers list, click the Layers button Layers at the upper right of the view.

Replace an image

You can replace an existing image that you uploaded with a new image file. You cannot replace an image that another user uploaded. The new image will be positioned the same as the existing image it replaces.

Complete the following steps to replace an image:

  1. Open the project editor.
  2. Click the Development button Development mode from the buttons at the left of the view.

    The development mode toolbar appears.

  3. Click the Select button Select tool in the toolbar to activate the selection tool.
  4. Select the image you want to replace by clicking it in the map.

    The Image context toolbar appears.

  5. Click the Replace image button Replace image.

    • The new image is positioned like the image it replaced.

  7. Click Resize and rotation to open the Modify image toolbar and start positioning the image. See Transform an image and Reshape an image for details.

Alternatively, click the Close button Close on the banner if you don't want to change the image position.

Position an image

There are two tools to position an image in the map and align it with the urban model's basemap or other spatial data:

  • Use the Transform tool to move and rotate the image or change its aspect ratio. See Transform an image for details.
  • Use the Reshape image tool to position an image by skewing it. You can achieve this either by moving each corner of the image individually or by positioning control points on the image and then moving the control points to their corresponding geographical position. Control points are points on the image for which you know the exact coordinates. See Reshape an image for details.

Both tools are accessible from the Modify image toolbar. Complete the following steps to open the Modify image toolbar:

  1. Open the project editor.
  2. Click the Development button Development mode from the buttons at the left of the view.

    The development mode toolbar appears.

  3. Click the Select button Select tool in the toolbar to activate the selection tool.
  4. Select the image you want to position by clicking it in the map.

    The Image context toolbar appears.

Transform an image

Complete the following steps to move and rotate an image or change its aspect ratio:

  1. Ensure the Image context toolbar is open and the image is selected.

To open the toolbar, complete the steps described in Position an image or click Resize and rotate on the notification banner after uploading or replacing an image.

  2. Transform the image:
    • Move the image—Click anywhere on the image and drag the pointer.
    • Rotate the image—Click and drag the rotate handle.
    • Change the aspect ratio of the image—Click one of the four image corners and drag the pointer.

Reshape an image

Use the Reshape image tool to position an image by skewing it. By default, the four corners of an image are control points for which you can define their location on the map. You can also move the four control points to a different position on the image.

Complete the following steps to position an image with the Reshape image tool:

  1. Ensure the Image context toolbar is open.

To open the toolbar, complete the steps described in Position an image or click Resize and rotate on the notification banner after uploading or replacing an image.

  2. Click the Reshape image button Reshape image from the Image context toolbar.

The four corners of the image are defined as control points by default and highlighted in the map with orange dots.

  3. Optionally, move any of the four control points to a different position on the image.
    1. Click the Position control points on image button Position control points in the Image context toolbar.

The four corners of the image are highlighted in the map with an orange dot.

    2. Click and drag any of the four control points to a different position on the image.

      Note:
This only changes the position of a control point on the image. It doesn't change how the image itself is located on the map.

    3. Click the Back button Return to image context toolbar.

The Position control points on image mode closes. The Image context toolbar appears.

  4. Move the control points to their corresponding geographical location in the map:
    • Click the control point and drag the pointer in the map to move a control point to its approximate geographical location.
    • Click the control point and press the Tab key to input coordinates to move a control point to its exact geographical location.

Duplicate an image to a scenario

Complete the following steps to duplicate an image to a scenario:

  1. Open the project editor.
  2. Click the Development button Development mode from the buttons at the left of the view.

    The development mode toolbar appears.

  3. Click the Select button Select tool in the toolbar to activate the selection tool.
  4. Select the image you want to duplicate to a scenario by clicking it in the map.

    The Image context toolbar appears.

  5. Click the More button More and select the Duplicate to option.

A list of scenarios the image can be duplicated to appears.

  6. Select the target scenario from the list by clicking it.

The target scenario opens and the selected image is duplicated to that scenario.

Change the display order of images

Complete the following steps to change the display order of images in the map:

  1. Open the project editor.
  2. Click the Development button Development mode from the buttons at the left of the view.

    The development mode toolbar appears.

  3. Click the Select button Select tool in the toolbar to activate the selection tool.
  4. Select the image you want to change the display order for by clicking it in the map.

    The Image context toolbar appears.

  5. Click the More button More.
  6. Select the Move forward option to move the selected image one step up in the order how images in that scenario are displayed.

The Move forward option is disabled if there is just one image in that scenario or if the selected image is already displayed at the frontmost position.

  7. Select the Move backward option to move the selected image one step back in the order how images in that scenario are displayed.

The Move backward option is disabled if there is just one image in that scenario or if the selected image is already displayed at the backmost position.

Delete an image

Complete the following steps to delete an image that you uploaded:

  1. Open the project editor.
  2. Click the Development button Development mode from the buttons at the left of the view.

    The development mode toolbar appears.

  3. Click the Select button Select tool in the toolbar to activate the selection tool.
  4. Select the image you want to delete by clicking it in the map.

    The Image context toolbar appears.

  5. Click the Delete button Delete.

    • The image is removed from the scenario.
    • The Image context toolbar closes.
    • The associated media layer item is still stored in your portal account.
