Set the visible range of a layer

You need the following account and license types to use this workflow:

• Microsoft license—You need a Microsoft 365 license, role Contributor or higher, to use this workflow.
• ArcGIS account type—Standard users can perform the basic functions of this workflow; you do not need to sign in.

You can limit the levels at which layers display in an ArcGIS for SharePoint map.

As you configure or view a map, you can limit the levels at which its layers display. These levels, or thresholds, allow you to specify when a layer displays. For example, you can set the range so a layer only displays when you zoom in to the level of a neighborhood or city, or a layer displays only when you zoom out to the level of an entire region or country.

Setting the visible range of a layer can be particularly useful to ensure that only relevant data is displayed when zooming in and out on the map.

For example, if a layer shows the locations of parks throughout a city, it's helpful to display the layer at a city level but not at a continent level. In this scenario, set the city level to the maximum threshold at which the layer displays. As you zoom out past the city level, the parks layer no longer displays.

Alternatively, a map may have state boundaries that only need to be shown at the country level, but not when zoomed in to city or neighborhood levels. In this scenario, set the minimum threshold of the state boundaries layer to country. As you zoom in, the layer no longer displays. In other words, with a minimum threshold of country, the state boundaries layer displays only when you are zoomed out to the country extent.

To set the visible range for a layer, complete the following steps:

1. From the map tools, click the Layers button .

   The Layers list appears on the map.

2. In the Layers list, click Layer options .

   The layer options appear.

3. Select the layer to modify from the Active layer drop-down menu.
4. From the layer options, click Properties .

   The Properties pane appears.

5. To set the maximum and minimum zoom levels for layer visibility, drag one or both handles of the slider.

   You can use labels such as Country, City, and Building, when choosing the best zoom levels. To set a more precise scale, click the drop-down arrows and choose a predefined zoom level. The arrow on the slider indicates the current zoom level of the map.

   As you drag the handle along the slider, a thumbnail map shows the zoom level.

6. Click the Back button to close the Properties pane and return to the Layers list.

As you zoom in and out on the map, the layer displays within the visible range you specified. The layer cannot be selected in the Layers list when it is out of visible range.
