ArcGIS for SharePoint has account and license requirements. Depending on your user account privileges or role type, different product functionality may be available. The following sections describe the account types, privileges, and limitations in ArcGIS for SharePoint.
Microsoft 365 license
To use ArcGIS for SharePoint, you need a Microsoft 365 license accessed through a plan. See the Microsoft 365 plans page in the Microsoft documentation for more information on available plans to access ArcGIS for SharePoint.
ArcGIS account
When you use ArcGIS for SharePoint, you are prompted to sign in. You can sign in with your ArcGIS organizational account or continue as a guest user. Guest users and ArcGIS account holders have different privileges within ArcGIS for SharePoint and have access to limited content and capabilities. With an ArcGIS account, functionality is available based on the ArcGIS user type and role configured by your ArcGIS organization administrator. If you do not have an ArcGIS account, you can sign up for a free trial ArcGIS Online subscription.ArcGIS Online Public Account types are not supported.

For more information about ArcGIS user types, roles, and privileges, refer to the ArcGIS Online documentation and ArcGIS Enterprise documentation.
ArcGIS authentication
ArcGIS for SharePoint works directly with an ArcGIS Online organization or ArcGIS Enterprise deployment.
The authentication method used to sign in is determined by the security features set up by your organization administrator. For more information about ArcGIS authentication and to ensure that security settings are properly implemented, refer to the security documentation for ArcGIS Online or ArcGIS Enterprise.
Authentication methods
You must be an organization administrator to administer ArcGIS authentication.
ArcGIS for SharePoint supports the following authentication methods for connecting to ArcGIS:
- Built-in accounts—Users provide their ArcGIS Online credentials. This results in the use of token-based authentication using OAuth 2.0.
- OpenID Connect—ArcGIS administrators can configure the ArcGIS Online sign-in page to show the OpenID Connect login. For more information, see the Set up OpenID Connect logins topic in the ArcGIS Online help.
- Enterprise logins—Enterprise (organizational) logins are supported using Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML) 2.0. For more information about SAML, see the Set up SAML logins topic in the ArcGIS Online help.
- IWA/PKI/LDAP/Smartcard—For more information about ArcGIS Enterprise authentication and IWA/PKI configuration, see the Portal authentication configuration topic in the ArcGIS Enterprise help.
