This document explains how to use the High Resolution Canopy Height Estimation deep learning model available on ArcGIS Living Atlas of the World.
Monitoring tree canopy height is crucial for assessing forest health, biodiversity, and carbon sequestration potential, as it provides insights into forest structure and ecosystem dynamics. Traditional measurement methods can be labor-intensive and time-consuming, often limited to small areas. In contrast, using deep learning models on high-resolution satellite imagery enables efficient and accurate measurement of tree canopy height across vast landscapes. These models can analyze intricate patterns and features in the imagery, allowing for real-time data collection and enabling large-scale monitoring that supports better conservation strategies and informed decision-making in forest management. Use this model to automate the workflow of estimating the tree canopy height using high-resolution satellite imagery over large extents.
License requirements
To complete this workflow, the following are the license requirements:
- ArcGIS Desktop—ArcGIS Image Analyst extension for ArcGIS Pro
- ArcGIS Enterprise—ArcGIS Image Server
- ArcGIS Online—ArcGIS Pro or Professional Plus user type
Model details
This model has the following characteristics:
- Input—Raster with red, green, and blue bands, with a cell size between 0.6 and 1 meter.
- Output—A single-band canopy height image in meters.
- Compute—This workflow is compute intensive, and a GPU with minimum CUDA compute capability of 6.0 and 8 GB of dedicated VRAM or higher is recommended.
- Applicable geographies—The model is expected to work globally.
- Architecture—This model uses the High Resolution Canopy Height Estimation model architecture.
Access and download the model
Download the High Resolution Canopy Height Estimation pretrained model from ArcGIS Living Atlas of the World. Alternatively, access the model directly from ArcGIS Pro, or consume it in ArcGIS Image for ArcGIS Online.
- Browse to ArcGIS Living Atlas of the World.
- Sign in with your ArcGIS Online credentials.
- Search for High Resolution Canopy Height Estimation and open the item page from the search results.
- Click the Download button to download the model.
You can use the downloaded .dlpk file directly in ArcGIS Pro, or upload and use it in ArcGIS Enterprise.
