Introduction to the model

Height estimation image

This document explains how to use the High Resolution Canopy Height Estimation deep learning model available on ArcGIS Living Atlas of the World.

Monitoring tree canopy height is crucial for assessing forest health, biodiversity, and carbon sequestration potential, as it provides insights into forest structure and ecosystem dynamics. Traditional measurement methods can be labor-intensive and time-consuming, often limited to small areas. In contrast, using deep learning models on high-resolution satellite imagery enables efficient and accurate measurement of tree canopy height across vast landscapes. These models can analyze intricate patterns and features in the imagery, allowing for real-time data collection and enabling large-scale monitoring that supports better conservation strategies and informed decision-making in forest management. Use this model to automate the workflow of estimating the tree canopy height using high-resolution satellite imagery over large extents.

Model details

This model has the following characteristics:

  • Input—Raster with red, green, and blue bands, with a cell size between 0.6 and 1 meter.
  • Output—A single-band canopy height image in meters.
  • Compute—This workflow is compute intensive, and a GPU with minimum CUDA compute capability of 6.0 and 8 GB of dedicated VRAM or higher is recommended.
  • Applicable geographies—The model is expected to work globally.
  • Architecture—This model uses the High Resolution Canopy Height Estimation model architecture.
