Lock the map extent

Note:

You need the following account and license types to use this workflow:

  • Microsoft license—You need a Microsoft 365 license, with the Contributor role or higher, to lock the map extent.
  • ArcGIS account type—Standard users can perform the basic functions of this workflow; you do not need to sign in.

You can lock the map extent so that Viewers see the map exactly as you intend. When the map extent is locked, events that by default generate a selection change on the map or filters applied to the data do not change the map display.

ArcGIS for Power BI maps are dynamic. They automatically pan and zoom to a location when you add pins or layers to the map, filter other visuals, or otherwise interact with the map.

See Zoom function to learn about zooming in or out on a map.

In some cases, you may want the map extent to remain locked in position so that the map doesn't automatically zoom when the map updates. Turning off automatic zoom and locking the map extent allow you to work with the map while maintaining a consistent view and to establish a zoom level and viewpoint for how a Viewer initially sees your map design.

You can turn off automatic zoom when you do the following:

  • Add a data layer to the map.
  • Drag fields into the Size, Color, Time, Tooltips, or Find Similar field wells.
  • Enable clustering.
  • Add pins.
  • Add a drive-time layer.
  • Add a layer from ArcGIS.
  • Filter other visualizations.

Turn off automatic zoom and lock the map extent

To turn off automatic zoom and lock the map extent while you work with a map or when you save a report, follow these steps:

  1. Open a map-enabled report or dashboard, or create one.
  2. In the Visualizations pane, click the Format visual tab.
  3. Expand the Map tools category.
  4. Turn on the Lock extent toggle button.

    Note:
You cannot turn on both Lock extent and Zoom tools at the same time. When you turn one on, the other is automatically turned off.

The map view is locked in its current position. You cannot zoom or pan the map while Lock extent is turned on.

  5. Turn on the Zoom tools toggle button to enable automatic zoom and turn off the extent lock.
  6. Style the map as you want Viewers to see it.

To ensure that Viewers initially see the map as you intend, lock the map extent before you save the report. When locked, the map does not update when, for example, a Viewer clicks another visual to filter the map.
