Manage observers

You can configure settings for a component's observers and run observers on demand from their component's Settings page.

Configure observer settings

You can enable and disable observers and configure observer intervals to meet your organization's monitoring requirements. You must be assigned the Administrator or Manager role to configure observer settings. To configure observer settings, complete these steps:

  1. Access ArcGIS Monitor, if necessary.

    The Home page appears.

  2. Click the Monitoring tab.

    The Monitoring page appears.

  3. Click More options More options for the component that contains the observer that you want to configure and click Edit in Settings.

    The component’s Settings page appears.

    Tip:

    Click Sort to change the sorting method, click Filter to create a query to filter the list, click Hide to choose which columns to hide or show, click Labels to filter the list by the chosen label, and click the categories at the side of the page to filter the list by the chosen category. You can also search for specific components by typing a keyword in the Search by component name or address text box.

  4. Click Observers from the side of the page.

    A list of the component's observers appears with the following status icons:

    IconDescription

    Status: Nominal

    Indicates that the observer has completed at least one successful run and has no known issues.

    Status: Info

    Indicates that observer ran successfully but returned an info-level diagnostic log entry.

    Status: Warning

    Indicates that the observer ran successfully but returned a warning-level diagnostic log entry.

    Status: Critical

    Indicates that the observer ran successfully but returned a critical-level diagnostic log entry.

    Status: Unknown

    Indicates one of the following:

    • The observer hasn't completed a successful run.
    • The observer is turned off.
    • The Monitor Agent machine responsible for monitoring the component is disconnected.
    • The component to which the observer belongs is part of an active incident.
    Status: Error

    Indicates that the observer failed and did not return information about the failure.

  5. Click the name of the observer that you want to configure.

    The observer's details page appears.

  6. Click Edit next to Interval.

    The Edit Observer dialog box appears.

  7. Click the Interval drop-down arrow and choose an interval.
  8. Optionally, use the Enabled toggle button to enable or disable the observer.
  9. Click Save.

    The observer's settings are updated.

View observer logs

You can view observer logs to help troubleshooting problems with a component's observers. You must be assigned the Administrator or Manager role to view observer logs. To view observer logs, complete these steps:

  1. Access Monitor, if necessary.

    The Home page appears.

  2. Click the Monitoring tab.

    The Monitoring page appears.

  3. Click More options More options for the component that contains the observer that you want to configure and click Edit in Settings.

    The component’s Settings page appears.

    Tip:

    Click Sort to change the sorting method, click Filter to create a query to filter the list, click Hide to choose which columns to hide or show, click Labels to filter the list by the chosen label, and click the categories at the side of the page to filter the list by the chosen category. You can also search for specific components by typing a keyword in the Search by component name or address text box.

  4. Click Observers from the side of the page.

    A list of the component's observers appears.

  5. Click the name of the observer for which you want to view logs.

    The observer's details page appears.

  6. Click View Logs under Logs.

    A list of the observer's log entries appears sorted by the time in which they were logged.

    Tip:

    Click Sort to change the sorting method, click Filter to create a query to filter the list, click Hide to choose which columns to hide or show, and click Refresh to refresh the list of log entries and show new log entries.

  7. Click View Details View Details next to the time of the log entry that you want to view.

    The Log Details dialog box appears with detailed information about the log entry.

Run an observer on demand

When changes have been made to a component, you can run an observer on demand to immediately refresh its data instead of waiting until the next observer interval. You must be assigned the Administrator or Manager role to run an observer on demand. To run an observer on demand, complete these steps:

  1. Access ArcGIS Monitor, if necessary.

    The Home page appears.

  2. Click the Monitoring tab.

    The Monitoring page appears.

  3. Click More options More options for the component that contains the observer that you want to configure and click Edit in Settings.

    The component’s Settings page appears.

    Tip:

    Click Sort to change the sorting method, click Filter to create a query to filter the list, click Hide to choose which columns to hide or show, click Labels to filter the list by the chosen label, and click the categories at the side of the page to filter the list by the chosen category. You can also search for specific components by typing a keyword in the Search by component name or address text box.

  4. Click Observers from the side of the page.

    A list of the component's observers appears.

  5. Click the name of the observer that you want to run on demand.

    The observer's details page appears.

  6. Click Run Observer under State.

    The observer runs and the component's data is collected by the observer.
