Publishing

Following are guidelines for publishing your scanned map collections.

How should I optimize my mosaic dataset?

Adding one or more indexes will speed up access to your mosaic dataset, and will aid in data queries and raster search. Any commonly accessed fields should be indexed. Possible examples include the map name, scale, date, imprint year, and sort order fields, though the best options will depend on your data.

How should I publish scanned maps?

Publishing elevation services is similar to publishing all other image services. Find more information about using ArcMap and ArcGIS Server to publish image services. If you're using server raster functions, these should be defined during the publishing process.

Should I create a cache?

No. The service will need to query too many fields to display the best possible scene to the user. If the service is cached, these queries won't be possible. Additionally, the user won't be able to toggle between displaying the collar and hiding it.

How should I maintain published services?

When a new data collection is added into the system, you should do the following:

  • Ingest the data into the service
  • Check if overviews need to be rebuilt. If they do, you should delete the current overviews and generate them again.
