Share a map to share spatially enriched content with your organization and the ArcGIS community.
The content that is available to share and the method you use to share it will vary depending on your user type, role, and account settings; the type of business data you're sharing (for example, Microsoft Excel tables); and whether the map contains private or public ArcGIS data. Sharing a map created in ArcGIS for Excel is a quick way to share information with your organization or the ArcGIS community.
Share a map
When you share a map, a web map is created in ArcGIS. Each data layer is converted to an ArcGIS hosted feature layer, and the attribute tables are automatically added to the Excel worksheet.
Note:
- You can only share a map or a layer to ArcGIS if you are signed in to an ArcGIS account with a user type and role that has privileges to create, analyze, and share content. Sharing must have been enabled by your organization's administrator. If you are unsure of your account permissions, contact your ArcGIS account administrator.
- To share a map containing a heat map layer to an ArcGIS Enterprise portal, you must use ArcGIS Enterprise 10.8 or later. Earlier versions of ArcGIS Enterprise do not support heat map layers.
- Ensure that the map layer names do not contain unsupported characters.
- If the map includes a layer with complex geometries, such as county boundaries, ArcGIS for Excel renders the layer in Excel, but sharing the layer to ArcGIS may cause the process to time out and fail.
To share a map to ArcGIS, complete the following steps:
- Sign in to your ArcGIS account if you are not already signed in.
- From the map tools, click Share | Export
.The Share | Export pane appears with the Share tab active.
- In the Share pane, specify a title, relevant tags, and a brief description of the map. You can also choose which folder (if any) to save it into, groups to which you belong, and whether to share it with one of the following:
- Your content (private)
- Your organization
- Everyone (public)
These values are used to display information about the map in ArcGIS and are also used for searching.
- Click Share to share the map to ArcGIS as a web map.
A progress window indicates the publishing process. Publishing may take several minutes depending on the amount of data in the map. To cancel sharing, click the Cancel button
to return to the map tools.Once the map is shared, each Excel data layer in the map is converted to an ArcGIS hosted feature layer. A web map is created in your ArcGIS organization that contains and references all these hosted feature layers. All layers are automatically added to the new Excel worksheet with their attribute data added. This includes the ObjectIDs of the hosted feature service attributes.
When the map has been shared successfully, a confirmation message appears, along with a link to view the shared map in ArcGIS. Click Open to view the item details page in ArcGIS, or click Copy link to copy the item details page link. This page displays the title, tags, and description you provided.
- Click the Close button
to close the pane. - Save the worksheet.
Note:
Changes made to the map in ArcGIS are not reflected in the map-enabled worksheet.
Update layer attributes
If you make changes to a map that you've shared, you can update the data of the layers within it.
To update the web map's feature layers, complete the following steps:
- In the Excel worksheet, go to the ArcGIS hosted feature layer attribute tables that were added.
- Add new records or modify existing data in the attribute tables.
The updates are automatically synced back to the ArcGIS hosted feature layer in ArcGIS Online.
Caution:
If you add new records with a different location type than what was earlier saved, no features appear on the map.
Note:
This workflow does not apply to adding, updating, and sharing a layer created from the PivotTable tool. You need to update a layer created from the PivotTable tool from the Share layer pane, and click Update.Update a shared map
