Find an address or place

ArcGIS for Excel includes an integrated Search tool that shows suggestions to help you find an address or place on a map. The tool uses ArcGIS World Geocoding Service to find locations.

See Navigate a map to learn more.

To find an address or place, complete the following steps:

  1. From the map tools, click Search Search.

The search text box appears on the map.

  2. Type a place-name or partial name, address, or coordinates.

    For example, type Las Vegas.

    Note:

If you type a generic term, such as museums, the map zooms to the closest location that matches the search results based on the center of the map extent.

    Note:

Alternatively, click Use current location to find your current physical location on the map. This option is not available in Microsoft Excel for the web.

As you type, a list of potential candidate matches appears, sorted by the closest match probability.

  3. Press Enter to search for the location or select a result from the potential matches.

A pop-up appears containing information about the location and additional search results.

  4. Optionally, do any of the following on the pop-up:
    • Click Dock Dock to pin a location pop-up to the map window.
    • Click Undock Undock to unpin the pop-up window.
    • Click Close Close to close the pop-up.
      Note:

Docked pop-ups last only as long as the current map session; they do not persist with a saved map.
