Utilize image views

There are three views you can use to work with your imagery in the imagery exploitation canvas of ArcGIS Excalibur. The metadata of your imagery determines the available view or views. When working with your imagery in each view, an indicator shows the progress of your image loading when the image is not fully rendered.

Map focus view

After finding suitable imagery and connecting to the imagery exploitation canvas, your imagery appears in the map focus view by default. The map focus view allows you to spatially view your imagery on top of a default basemap, where your imagery is automatically orthorectified and is aligned with the map.

The following are default behaviors of the map focus view:

  • The map focus view is zoomed to the extent of the service if it's connected using an imagery web service or available imagery; it's zoomed to the extent of the queued image or images if it's connected from the imagery catalog search.
  • The image metadata table is expanded by default, displaying up to the first 500 records of your imagery, if applicable.
  • The footprints of each record appear in red on the map focus view, corresponding to each row in the image metadata table.
  • The image for each record is displayed in each red footprint on the map focus view, corresponding to each row in the image metadata table.
  • You can zoom in and out on the map using the pointer or the zoom in and zoom out buttons.
  • You can change the basemap using the Basemap button below the zoom buttons.

Split view

You can also view your imagery in split view, which allows you to use the map focus view and image focus view at the same time. This is helpful since you can view your imagery aligned to a map (in map focus view), and view the same imagery as it was captured in its native perspective (in image focus view).

Switch to split view

To view your imagery in split view, complete the following steps:

  1. In map focus view with the image metadata table expanded, select an image.

The selected image footprint is highlighted in cyan.

  2. Click the Set as Focus Image button (satellite icon) in the image metadata table.

This button is only enabled when an image is selected in the image metadata table.

    Note:
Based on your image format and type, the image may not be supported in the image coordinate space and a message will appear in the image focus panel.

A split view of the selected image appears in both map focus view and image focus view. If the selected image is within your current extent, you will remain at your current map extent. If the selected image is outside of your current extent, you will be zoomed to the extent of the image. All imagery, other than the selected image, is turned off in map focus view, allowing you to focus on the selected image.

    Note:

You can only view one image at a time in image focus view.

  3. Optionally turn the footprints of images in the map focus view on or off in the Layer List.

By default, the Lock Extents toggle button is on, allowing you to navigate in the map focus or image focus views while automatically navigating to the corresponding location in the opposite view for better orientation.

  4. Optionally resize the split view by dragging the middle pane to the left or right.

If the Lock Extents toggle button is on, allowing you to navigate in the map focus or image focus views while automatically navigating to the corresponding location in the opposite view for better orientation.

  5. Click the close button in the upper right corner of the image focus view panel to close split view.

The map focus view extent remains centered on the previously focused image, and all other imagery in the image metadata table is automatically turned back on.

Image focus view

When you're using split view, you can expand the view of your focused image to a maximized state, allowing you more room to work with your focused image in its native perspective.

Expand the Image Space panel

To maximize the state of the image focus view, complete the following steps:

  1. Click the Expand Image Space Panel button in the upper right corner of the image focus view.

Once the panel is expanded, you can continue to work with your focused image.

  2. Optionally click the Reset to Split View button in the upper right corner of the image focus view to switch back to split view.
  3. Click the close button in the upper right corner to close the current view.

View metadata

If your focused image supports the image focus view, you can view its metadata at any time by expanding the metadata button.

  1. Click the document button in the upper right corner of the image focus view to view the corresponding metadata of your focused image.

    Note:

The metadata tray can be viewed in three sizes by clicking the expand button at the bottom of the tray. Clicking this button cycles through the three sizes. The middle size is the default.

  2. Optionally click the copy button in the lower right corner of the metadata tray to copy the image metadata to your clipboard.
  3. Click the Close button in the upper right corner to close the current view.

Rotate View tool

The Rotate View tool allows you to rotate your image in the Image Focus Panel. To rotate your image, complete the following steps:

  1. Click Rotate View in the Image Focus Panel.

The Rotate View is at a default of Top Up.

  2. Click and drag the outer ring to rotate your image.

The title of the tool changes to Custom.

  3. Click Custom to reset the tool to Top Up.
  4. Click Collapse to collapse the tool. Your image will remain in the last rotated position.
